A 55 year-old suspect of the murder case of lawyer (이승용) Lee Seung-yong in 1999, which is a long-term cold case, was arrested and charged with murder. The suspect surnamed Kim was arrested in Cambodia 22 years after the incident.

The Jeju Provincial Police Agency
initially sent the case to the prosecutor’s office
on charges of conspiracy related to a murder.
However, the charges were changed based on the
relationship between the suspect,
the method of how the crime was conducted and
The tools that were used in the crime.

The police investigated the financial transactions
of Kim with the dead victim and of his acquaintances
and utilized various scientific investigation methods,
including digital forensic on his phone.
They also enforced search and seizure of the crime scenes.

It is reported that Kim is denying the charges
and that he changed his testimonies
during investigations.

In relation to the provincial governor elections,
the police stated that they are not able to disclose any
detailed information at this time.


변호사 살인사건 50대 '살인죄'로 구속기소

지난 1999년 발생한 변호사 피살사건과 관련해
22년만에
캄보디아에서 검거한
55살 김 모씨에 대해 살인죄를 적용해 구속기소했습니다.

당초 경찰에서는
살인교사죄를 적용해 송치했으나
범행에서 피의자의 역할과 공범과의 관계,
범행방법, 도구 등에 비춰 이같이 결정했다고 밝혔습니다.

그동안 피의자는 물론 이미 숨진 공범, 주변인물에 대한
금융거래내역을 추적했고
핸드폰에 대해서도 디지털 포렌식을 비롯한
다양한 과학수사기법을 활용했으며
관련 장소들에 대해 압수수색을 실시했다고 설명했습니다.

선거개입 등과 관련해서는
살인사건 동기를 밝혀내기 위한 필요 과정이지만
구체적으로 답변할 수 없다고 덧붙였습니다.

한편 피의자 김 씨는
검찰 조사에서 진술을 번복하는 등
관련 혐의를 부인하는 것으로 알려지고 있습니다.
