Greenland Sells 80% Share in Jeju Hospital

Greenland International Medical Center in the Jeju Healthcare Town has been sold. The center, which would have been the nation’s first for-profit hospital, had its license rescinded prior to opening two and a half years ago.

Greenland sells 80% share to Korean corporation

The transaction involves the sale of a 75 percent stake by Greenland Group, with a further 5 percent in the works. Once the purchase is finalized, the share distribution will be eight to two between the buyer—a Korean medical corporation—and the Chinese-owned firm.

The Korean corporation was established by local business people in the medical field.
Its parent company produces pharmaceuticals and operates a domestic hospital.

Following the recent contract signing, an interim payment was made, with the remainder set to be paid out in November.

A majority share of the company, in this case a 51 percent stake or higher, means that ownership of the hospital building will be legally transferred to the Korean corporation.

(문대림) Moon Dae-rim, CEO of the Jeju Free International City Development Center which is associated with Jeju Healthcare Town, announced the sale of the medical center.
He said the transaction is a part of an ongoing effort to normalize Jeju Healthcare Town, and that the Greenland Group has modified its for-profit plan for the hospital.

Greenland Group still has 20 percent of shares. Insiders believe that the firm will play a role in bringing Chinese patients to the hospital, which in turn will lead to increases in profits at its hotel and other Greenland-owned businesses.

Both parties are reportedly open to transitioning from a for-profit model.

A local court recently ruled that the province’s initial cancellation of the medical center’s business license was unfair, siding with the plaintiff — Greenland Group.
Both parties are waiting on a Supreme Court decision on the matter.
For now, the Chinese-owned firm has ostensibly given up its business as a foreign medical institution. And though questions remain about how the deal will play out, progress appears to be at hand.

녹지지분 매각 공식 확인…"비영리병원 전환"

개설 허가 취소로
2년 반 동안 방치되던 녹지국제병원이
국내 모 인사에게 매각됐습니다.

지분 75%를 매각하는 양자 간 계약이 체결됐고
조만간 5%를 추가 매각하면
8 대 2의 지분 구조가 형성됩니다.

계약 당사자는 녹지병원,
그리고 국내 의료 관련 인사가
제주에서의
사업을 목적으로 별도 설립한
특수 목적 합작 법인으로 확인됐습니다.

국내에서 제약과 병원을 운영하고 있는 업체입니다.

최근 계약에 따른 중도금이 지급된 데 이어
11월쯤에는
잔금까지 처리될 예정으로 전해졌습니다.

통상적으로 지분의 51% 이상 보유하면
소유권이 인정되는 만큼
지분 80%를 차지한
법인 쪽으로
녹지병원 건물에 대한 소유권이 넘어가는 상황입니다.

그 배경을 두고 논란이 커져가던 가운데
헬스케어타운 공동 사업자인 JDC의
문대림 이사장이 이 같은 사실을 공식화했습니다.

문 이사장은
녹지병원 매각은 헬스케어타운 정상화 과정이라며
녹지 측이 더 이상
영리병원을 고집하지 않겠다는 의미라고 설명했습니다.

녹지 측이
나머지 지분 20%를 유지한 배경으로는
중국인 환자를 유치하는 역할과 동시에
녹지가 보유한 호텔 등
상업시설 이용을 유도하는 목적으로 풀이됩니다.

계약 당사자인 모 법인 측에서
영리병원에 대한 욕심은 없다는 입장으로 전해진 가운데
녹지 측도
영리병원이 아닌 비영리병원,
즉 일반병원으로의 전환 가능성에 무게를 실었습니다.

특히 항소심을 이기고
대법원 판결을 앞둔 시점이어서
매각 배경에 대한 궁금증은 더욱 커지고 있습니다.
