More Wild Dogs in Jeju

It is estimated that 2,000 wild dogs are residing in middle mountainous areas in Jeju.

The provincial government has commissioned Jeju National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation to conduct a research on inhabitation of wild dogs. The results forecasted that about 1,600 to 2,100 wild dogs are inhabiting middle mountainous areas.

In particular, the results found out that wild dogs,
as apex predators, have harmed both livestock and wild animals,
including cattles, chickens and roe deers.

The researchers suggest the expansion of spaying and neutering
and animal registration systems so that abandoned dogs cannot become wild dogs. They also request legal review whether to designate wild dogs as harmful wild animals.

제주지역 중산간에
야생화된 들개가 2천마리 정도 서식하는 것으로
추정되고 있습니다.

제주도가 제주대 산학협력단에 의뢰한
야생들개 서식 실태조사 용역 결과
중산간 지대에 1천 600여 마리에서 2천 100여 마리가
서식하고 있을 것으로 예측됐습니다.

특히 야생들개가 최상위 포식자로서
소나 닭 같은 가축과 노루 등 야생동물에도
지속적인 피해를 주는 것으로 조사됐습니다.

용역진은 유기견이 들개화되지 않도록
동물등록제와 중성화 수술 확대 등을 추진하고
유해 야생동물 지정 여부에 대한
법적 검토를 제안했습니다.
