New Year’s COVID Doldrums
This is (성산) Seongsan Sunrise Peak.
Unlike previous years, the once crowded and festive spot where people came to welcome the new year, is more subdued than ever.
Local merchants are lamenting that the number of visitors will again not live up to their expectations.
Due to another nationwide spread of COVID-19, this year's sunset and sunrise festivals will once again be scaled back to non-face-to-face events.
The trail and parking lots at Seongsan Sunrise Peak will be closed from 7 p.m. on December 31st to 9 a.m. on January 1st.
Nearby beaches, which are popular for sunrise watching, will also be closed to the public.
It will also be impossible to view the sunset and sunrise from the top of Hallasan Mountain.
In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the government has decided to close all hiking trails in national parks, including Hallasan Mountain, for three days from the 31st to the 2nd.
Large sports events and festivals at the beginning of the New Year have also been canceled.
The Seogwipo International Winter Sea Penguin Swim held annually on January 1st has been canceled in light of the pandemic.
New Year's greetings held by the leaders of local organizations, including the governor and the chair of the Provincial Council, have also been canceled for a second year.
With the island's New Year's sunset and sunrise events called off again due to COVID-19, a looming sense of regret hangs over businesses that had hoped for a much-needed windfall.

코로나19 재확산으로 올해도
해넘이 행사와
일출제가 올해도 비대면으로 축소 진행됩니다.
특히 전날 오후 7시부터 새해 첫날 오전 9시까지는
성산일출봉 입산 뿐만 아니라 주차장 이용도 전면 통제됩니다.
일출봉 주변 해돋이 명소인 해변에도 인파가 몰리지 않도록
출입이 통제됩니다.
한라산 정상에서의 해넘이와 해돋이도 볼 수 없게 됐습니다.
정부가 코로나19 확산 방지를 위해 31일부터 새해 2일까지 사흘간 한라산 등 국립공원 입장을 전면 통제하기로 했습니다.
새해 연초 굵직한 대형 스포츠 축제와 행사들도 잇따라 취소됐습니다.
매년 1월 1일 열리는
국제펭귄수영대회도 코로나19로 인해 무산됐습니다.
새해 제주도지사와 도의회 의장 등
도내 각급 기관단체장들이 참여하는
'제주도민 신년인사회' 역시 올해에 이어 2년 연속 취소됐습니다.
코로나19 재확산 속에 기대했던 해넘이·해돋이 행사가
줄지어 취소되면서 반짝 특수를 기대하던
명소 주변 상권에선 깊은 한숨만 흘러나오고 있습니다.
