Changing Funerary Customs

This is the island's first natural burial ground for cremated remains, (어승생 한울누리) Eoseungsaeng Hanulnuri Cemetery, which opened in 2012.
At first sight, it looks like a public park with rocks, trees, and grassy areas.
Small monuments under the neatly arranged trees show that this place is a cemetery.


The ratio of Jeju residents choosing cremation is 77.4 percent.
That's the lowest in the nation, but it's a big leap from 48 percent back in 2010.


With awareness of cremation growing rapidly, more people are opting for internment in a natural burial ground.
At present, (어승생 한울누리) Eoseungsaeng Hanulnuri Cemetery is expected to reach capacity in the first half of this year.
There are four types of interment spaces in the cemetery: around a tree, in a garden plot, around a flowering shrub, or in a grassy area.
The first three types are already full, and more than 90 percent of the grassy area is occupied.


Jeju City is planning to convert the (동부) Dongbu Public Cemetery into a natural burial ground to meet the growing demand.
Three burial sections out of 10 in the cemetery will be switched to this newer type. This will accommodate up to 30,000 cremated remains on 40,000 square meters.
However, if this conversion project fails to be completed on schedule, natural burials on the island could come to a halt.

The cremation ratio is growing in Jeju. We've successfully brought national funds to build a natural burial ground at Dongbu Public Cemetery before the Eoseungsaeng Hanulnuri Cemetery is full.


Traditionally, Jeju's funerary customs have involved interring loved ones in family burial plots. But an increasing number of families are choosing more practical - and ecological - ways of honoring a deceased family member.


달라지는 장묘문화…한울누리공원 '포화'

지난 2012년에 문을 연
제주도내 첫 자연장 공원인 '제주 어승생 한울누리공원'입니다.

언뜻 보기에도 장례시설보다는 도심 속 공원의 모습과 비슷합니다.

공원 곳곳에 마련된 정원과 나무 아래로
이름이 새겨진
작은 비석들이 보입니다.

지난해 제주 지역의 화장률은 77.4%로 전국에서 가장 낮은 수준입니다.

하지만 지난 2010년 48%였던 점을 감안하면
화장율은
매해 크게 오르고 있습니다.

과거와 달리
화장에 대한 인식이 달라지고
자연친화적인 자연장을 선호하는 사람들이 늘면서
한울누리공원은
올 상반기 만장될 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.

실제로
수목형과 정원형, 화초형 안장은
가득 차 이미 자리가 없고
잔디형 안장은 90%를 넘어섰습니다.

제주시는 이같은 추세에
매장형 묘지로 조성한
제주동부공설묘지를 자연장지로 전환하기로 했습니다.

동부공설묘지 10개 구역 가운데 3개 구역,
4만 제곱미터에
3만 구를 안장할 수 있는 규모입니다.

적지에 사업을 마무리하지 못한다면
장묘대란에 대한 우려도 나오고 있습니다.

가족과 문중 묘지 등의 영향으로
매장 문화가 우세했던 제주에서도
시대가 흐르며
실용성을 중시하는
장묘 문화가 점차 자리잡고 있습니다.
