(월평동) Wolpyeong-dong in Seogwipo is Jeju's largest producer of citrus hybrids.
The demand for crossbred citrus fruits is growing, but the aging community here has yet to successfully find a market for their product.
The local community, along with the (월평) Wolpyeong Community Restoration Support Center, are working together to solve the issue, and opened a farmers' market this month.
The farmers' market, situated in the corner of the village park, is visited by a steady stream of shoppers.

These are 32,600 won for 3kg. This here is 48,000 won. It's economical to buy the fruit more cheaply here and then enjoy it at home1.
Here, hungry shoppers can taste the fresh, crossbred citrus fruits that have been grown by local farmers.
Their satisfaction is written plainly on their faces.
The local farmers who have brought their goods to market are also very satisfied; the sales bring in profits for their village.

We were nervous because this was our first farmers' market. We weren't sure how many people would come out, nor how the response would be. Now, having seen how things went yesterday and today, we're hopeful.
Profits from the market will be spent to improve the village's residential environment and to revitalize its economic community.

We're trying to provide the structure to solve the community's issues by hosting a variety of experiences, like selling fruit at a farmers' market. We hope these efforts benefit our local farmers.
With a good start for these hybrid citrus fruits now in the books, things are looking brighter.
Now, moving forward, the next challenge for the village is having its community lead it in a sustainable, and successful, business venture.

"이건 3kg에 3만 2천600 원. 이건 4만 8천 원이에요. 실속형으로 가정에서 드실 수 있는 것도 조금 더 저렴하게 판매하고 있어요"

지역 농민들은 새로운 판로확보를 확보하고 마을 수익도 창출되면서 만족도가 큽니다.

"처음이니까 불안했거든요. (사람들이) 얼마나 올 지, 호응도가 어떨지. 어제, 오늘 지켜보니까 이걸(직거래장터를)잘 꾸며보면 가능성이 있겠다..."
