Tomographic Survey on the Back Burner

The risk level of Jeju is on the back burner even though it was proven that Jeju is not safe from earthquakes we’ve experienced in the western area in Seogwipo City in December, 2021. Some say countermeasures are urgent.

A nationwide tomography survey has been conducted in stages since an earthquake occurred in Gyeongju City back in 2007.

And at that time, Jeju was categorized as a safe zone. Thus, the survey is planned to be held in 2037.

However, the researcher insisted that the request for moving up the survey to Seoul should be made.

In addition, the research also emphasized at a briefing session
that education and training programs should be expanded
and that the response system needs to be relooked at,
as the risk level caused by earthquake has risen.

지난해 12월
서귀포시 서남서쪽 지진 발생으로
제주가 더 이상 안전지대가 아니라는 점이 입증된 가운데
실제 위험수준을 파악하기 위한
국가 차원의 조사가 후순위로 밀려
대책이 시급한 것으로 지적되고 있습니다.

제주연구원 박창열 연구원은
제주 지진 발생과 향후 과제에 대한 브리프에서
지난 2007년 경주 지진 발생으로
국가 차원의 한반도 단층에 대한 조사가
단계별로 이뤄지고 있는 가운데

제주의 경우 안전지대로 분류되면서
오는 2037년에야 시작되는 것으로 일정이 잡혀 있다며
이를 앞당길 수 있도록 정부에 건의해야 한다고 주장했습니다.

또 지진 위험도가 상향된 만큼
제주지역 대응체계를 재정비하고
관련된 교육이나 훈련 프로그램도 확대해야 한다고 강조했습니다.
