5 Remains Confirmed After 74 Years

The identities of 5 dead bodies that were found at a runway at the Jeju International Airport were confirmed after 74 years. The dead bodies are assumed to be of victims from the April 3rd Incident.

The provincial government and the Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation
said that after conducting a new DNA and blood-collection test from bereaved families,
they could identify the identities of three victims
from military trials and two missing people.

They had recovered remains from 2007 to 2009
at the Jeju International AIrport,
but the identities were not confirmed.

Meanwhile, additional six remains were recovered after an excavation investigation at seven locations,
where dead bodies are expected to be buried,
including (가시리) Gasi-ri in Seogwipo City last year.

The province plans to begin identity confirmation through DNA tests.



74년 만에 4·3희생자 유해 5구 신원 확인

제주공항 활주로에서 수습된 4·3희생자 유해 5구의 신원이 74년 만에 확인됐습니다.

제주도와 4·3평화재단은 새로운 방식의 유전자 검사와
유가족 추가 채혈을 실시한 결과 군법회의 희생자 3명과 행방불명인 2명의
신원을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다.

이들은 지난 2007년부터 2009년까지 제주공항 활주로에서 유해가 수습됐지만,
지금까지 신원이 확인되지 않은 채 남아있었습니다.

한편 지난해 서귀포시 가시리를 비롯해 암매장 추정지역
7곳에서 진행된 발굴조사 결과 모두 6구의 유해가 추가로 수습됐습니다.

제주도는 유전자 검사를 통한 신원 확인 작업에 착수한다는 계획입니다.
