Clinics Allowed to Test and Treat COVID-19 patients

This ENT clinic in Jeju City has created an area to conduct rapid antigen tests for COVID-19.


Under the rules of the new national COVID-19 response system, the more-reliable polymerase chain reaction, or PCR tests, are now reserved for people aged 60 or over, and those who have come into close contact with a COVID-19 patient. South Korea now also allows medical clinics to conduct rapid antigen testing.


Previously, (중앙) Jungang Hospital and (한마음) Hanmaeum Hospital were the two nationally-designated testing and treatment facilities for the coronavirus in Jeju.


Now, 25 local clinics have joined the testing and treatment facility list.
Patients with a fever and/or respiratory symptoms can get tested for the virus and even get a prescription from the newly-approved clinics starting Monday, February 7th.
But some clinics that were appointed are expressing their dissatisfaction at a decision that was made outside their control.


The clinics have to have separate areas for patients with COVID-19 symptoms and those without, but this can be difficult because of the space required.
The shortage in certain medical supplies, such as protective clothing for clinic staff, has also been pointed out as a problem.

With the contact-tracing abilities of quarantine authorities having reached their limits, tracing methods are changing from February 7th in order to focus on higher-risk groups.


When a case is confirmed, the public health center will send a text message to the infected person. This patient must then report their movements and also a list of people with whom they have had recent contact.


As omicron cases continue to grow rapidly, this new system of clinic testing and personal tracing will soon be put to the test. With no more quarantine personnel or resources available, the next few weeks will be very telling in how the virus develops on Jeju.



동네병원서도 검사.진료…자신이 동선 입력

동네 병·의원을 통해
진찰부터 진단검사와 먹는 치료제 처방까지 가능합니다.

하지만 어쩔 수 없이 코로나 검사 부담을 나누게 된
동네 병의원들은
방역당국의 준비 부족에 불만을 터뜨리고 있습니다.


공간이 협소해 유증상자와 일반 환자들간의 동선 분리가 쉽지 않은데다
의료진들이 갖춰야 할
기본적인 방호복 등
의료품 부족도 문제로 지적합니다.

부족한 방역 인력을
고위험군 관리에 집중하기 위해
다음주부터 역학 조사 방식도 바뀝니다.


확진자가 발생하면 보건소에서는 안내 문자를 발송하고
확진자 본인이
추정 감염경로와
가족 등 접촉자 여부 등을 직접 입력해야 합니다.


동네 병의원들의 진료 검사 참여와 자가 역학조사 방식이
확진자 급증에 따른
부족한 방역 인력 문제 해소에 도움을 줄 지 주목됩니다.
