Underprepared for Testing and Treatment

This is a local ENT clinic allowed to conduct rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 in Jeju City.
Under the rules of the new national COVID-19 response system, the more-reliable polymerase chain reaction, or PCR tests, are now reserved for people aged 60 or over, and those who have come into close contact with a COVID-19 patient.
Therefore, those who are not in the high-risk group come to the clinic to get the rapid test.


For those who test positive, the doctor quarantines them to minimize contact and advises them to get PCR tests.

As the epidemiological investigation by quarantine authorities is reaching its limit, local medical clinics have been allowed to conduct rapid antigen testing and prescribe pills to treat patients since this week.

I came to get the rapid test as I could be possibly infected. Results from the antigen test come out quickly.


However clinics fail to treat patients diagnosed with COVID-19 as authorities and clinics are underprepared.


Systems between clinics and the public administration haven't been integrated for a COVID-19 response, so patients cannot get treatment at the clinics as of now.
And there are no guidelines set for patients under at-home treatment that clinics should provide medical care to.


There are only four local clinics that can perform PCR tests in Jeju.

Demand for coronavirus testing at local clinics is soaring, but systems are ill-prepared. It is expected to be a confusing period in responding to the pandemic at local clinics for the time being.

어느 정도 효과를 보고 있습니다.

하지만 첫 날부터 준비 부족으로
동네 병의원에서의 환자 치료는 차질을 빚었습니다.

정확한 매뉴얼이 마련되지 않아 불가능한 실정입니다.


게다가 전체 병의원 가운데
PCR 검사가 가능한 곳은
단 4곳에 불과해 한계를 보이고 있습니다.

"행정적인 부분이 너무 따라오지 못해요. PCR 검사가 나갈 때 업체에 위탁을 하는데 그런게 없는 병원이 대부분이에요."


동네 병의원에서 검사를 받겠다는 수요는 점차 늘고 있지만
시스템은
자리를 잡지 못하며
당분간 혼선이 불가피할 전망입니다.
