Small Bookstore Publishes Books about Jeju


A local bookstore in Seogwipo has recently published two independent books about Jeju Island.
"What is UNESCO World Natural Heritage," talks about Jeju's natural environment and resources. The second, "The God-given Seed, Buckwheat," is fairly self-explanatory.


There have been more than 1,000 publications about Jeju Island registered with the National Archives of Korea over the past decade, but of these, few are actually available to the general public. It was because of this situation that this local bookstore decided to publish its own book.


The owner, Mr. (강시영) Gang Shi-yeong, is a former journalist who worked at one of Jeju's daily newspapers and is credited as a co-author of "What is UNESCO World Natural Heritage."
He wrote many articles when the island was first registered as a natural heritage site, in addition to stories of other UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites he has visited all across the world.

It's a story that I myself experienced; my photographer took all of the photos - those both at home and abroad. There were quite a few behind-the-scenes stories that were not well known to the public when Jeju attempted to add the island to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.


Jeju has the largest cultivated area of buckwheat in the country, and it was for reasons like this that a book praising the crop was recently published alongside the book on UNESCO sites.
The book "God-given Seed, Buckwheat" contains tales of buckwheat in Jeju myth, how the crop is cultivated here, as well as examples of foods made with buckwheat.

The book is not simply about the beauty of the buckwheat flowers and nostalgic Jeju foods. It shows the real relationship the food has had on islanders, as well as scientific explanations.


The small bookstore plans to annually publish books about the beauty of the island, for example with topics of UNESCO Global Geoparks, (밭담) batdam or stone wall, and Jeju forest.


The small bookstore's attempts to highlight the value of the island are receiving attention.


동네책방의 새로운 도전…제주 담은 책 출간


서귀포시의 한 동네책방이
두 권의 제주형 독립출판물을 잇따라 출간했습니다,

제주의 자연환경과 자원을 담은 <세계자연유산이 뭐길래>와
<신이 내린 씨앗, 메밀>이 그 책입니다.

국가기록원에 최근 10여년 간 등록된 제주관련 출판물은
1천여 종이 넘지만
정작 일반 대중들이 접할 수 있는 출판물은
거의 없다시피해
동네책방이
직접 출간을 하게 된 겁니다.

지역일간지 기자 출신인 책방지기 강시영 씨는
공동저자로도 참여해
제주의 유네스코 세계자연유산 등재 당시 뒷이야기와
직접 답사취재한 세계의 자연유산 이야기들을 책에 담았습니다.

"발로 뛴 그런 내용들이거든요. 사진도 직접 사진작가가 국내외 전부 다 찍은 사진들이에요.
제주도가 세계자연유산으로 등재되기까지의 여러 가지 숱한 과정들이 있었는데 일반 대중들에게 잘 알려지지 않은
비하인드 스토리들도 꽤 있었거든요."


전국에서 가장 넓은 재배면적을 자랑하는
제주 메밀의 이야기도
한 권의 책으로 담아냈습니다.

제주의 신화 속 메밀 이야기와 재배 환경,
관련 음식 등
다양한 내용들로 채워졌습니다.

"막연히 메밀꽃이 아름답고 추억의 음식이다라는 측면이 아니라 구체적으로 어떻게 일반 서민들한테 투영되어 있고
그것들이 과학적으로는 어떻게 설명해야 되는지 이런 것들에 대한 내용을 실었습니다."


이 동네책방은 앞으로
세계지질공원과 제주밭담, 제주숲 등
제주다움을 담은 다양한 책들을
해마다 시리즈로 펴낼 예정입니다.

제주의 가치를 기록하는
작은 책방의 시도에 주목하는 이유이기도 합니다.
