Modular Classrooms Introduced

This is an elementary school in Jeju City.


The total number of students has increased by about 100 this year, compared to the previous year.
The spring semester started today(Mar.2), but construction is still underway to create new classrooms.


Modular classrooms can ease student density at schools.

We needed five more classrooms this year with a sudden increase in the number of students. The construction of adding new classrooms couldn't be completed before this semester. No additional classrooms were available.

A toy block-shaped building stands out on one side of the playground.


In the solid steel structure, eco-friendly materials are used for the floor and ceiling.
High quality air purification systems that are usually adopted by postpartum care centers as well as cooling and heating facilities and fire protection systems are installed.


Six classrooms are created in the two-story building.

It takes less than 15 days for the custom-made portable building with internal systems to be crafted at a factory.
Efforts have been made to clear away some parents' negative perception on the mobile building.


The school management visited schools in the mainland that have already introduced modular classrooms with representatives of parents to relieve their concerns.

Both my office and the modular classroom makers are listening to parents' voices to improve the newly introduced facilities.


The area is somewhat small for movement, but teachers say it is not much different from regular classrooms.

The modular classrooms are a little bit smaller than regular ones and they are in a separate structure. I think children would feel differently from the classroom they've experienced so far.

In order to reduce student density, a number of new classrooms have been added this year.
But 10 percent of elementary schools are still overcrowded, and the proportion of overcrowded classrooms in middle and high schools is larger than this.

In this situation, schools are paying attention to modular classrooms to ease student density.




'모듈러 교실' 첫 선…과밀학급 대안 될까?

제주시내 한 초등학교

이 학교는 올해 신입생을 비롯해 100명의 학생이 더 늘었습니다.

교실 증축 공사가 한창이지만 새학기까지 맞추기란 불가능합니다.

공사를 제 때 마치지 못할 경우
과밀학급이 우려됐지만
이른바 '모듈러 교실'로 이런 걱정을 해결했습니다.

"작년에 비해 다섯 학급이 갑자기 늘어났는데 교실 증축하는 속도가
학생이 늘어나는 속도를 따라잡지 못해서 당장 이 아이들을 수용할 교실이 없는 상태였습니다. "

운동장 한쪽에 블럭 모형의 건물이 눈에 띕니다.

견고한 철골 구조에 바닥과 천정 등을 친환경 자재로 사용했습니다.

냉난방과 소방시설은 물론 산후조리원 수준의 공기정화 시설도 설치돼 있습니다.

2층 규모로 모두 6개의 교실이 꾸며졌습니다.

주문에 맞춰 공장에서 제작된 이동식 건물이라
내부 설비까지
공사기간은 보름이 채 걸리지 않았습니다.

'일종의 컨테이너 교실 아니냐'는
일부 학부모들의 부정적 인식을
해소하기 위한 노력도 이어졌습니다.

학부모 대표와 함께 다른 지역 모듈러 교실을 견학해
이같은 학부모들의 걱정을 덜었습니다.

"학부모들이 우려하는 사안들이 있다면 그런 것들은 즉각 반영해서
아마 업체들도 바로 그런 것들에 대한 개선 노력들은 할 겁니다."

이동을 위해 면적이 다소 작다는 단점이 있지만
교사들도
일반 교실과 큰 차이는 없다고 말합니다.

"기존의 교실과 크기도 다르고 뭔가 학교 바깥에 이렇게 컨테이너처럼 따로 왔다는 점에서 아이들이 지금까지 경험했던 교실과는 좀 다르게 느끼지 않을까... "

과밀학급을 줄이기 위해 올해도 많은 교실을 늘렸지만
전체 초등학교의 10%가 여전히 과밀학급이고
중,고등학교의 과밀학급 비율은 이보다 더 큽니다

이를 위해 도입된 모듈러 교실이
과밀학급 해소의 대안으로 자리 잡을 지 주목됩니다.
