Honeybee Population Plummets

Honeybees that journey out to collect honey are supposed to return to their hives, but bees often disappear or are found dead in clusters.

The farm has had to reduce the size of its beekeeping business by about half, compared with normal years when honey was produced from 250 beehive boxes.
This means that around 500 honeybees have disappeared.

I used to collect honey from 250 beehive boxes, but this year I have only 120 boxes.

Bee losses have been reported across the island.
The province has inspected the island's 400 beekeeping farms. One third have sustained losses in their bee populations.

The same phenomenon has been observed in southern areas of the mainland.

Some say that an outbreak of pests and disturbances in bee behavior caused by climate change have affected local bee populations, but no clear reason has been identified.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has launched an investigation to identify the cause, and the province is seeking ways for local beekeepers to stay in business.

We don't know the cause, but we're talking with the Jeju Beekeepers Association to help beekeepers suffering from bee loss. It could be insufficient, but we're trying to respond to this mysterious phenomenon.

With just one month to go before the spring honey season starts, beekeepers are lamenting the reduction in the number of their precious honeybees.




그 많던 꿀벌 어디에…양봉 농가 피해 속출


조천읍에 있는
한 양봉농가 입니다.
꿀벌들이 들어있어야 할
벌통이 창고에 한가득 쌓여 있습니다.
농가 이곳 저곳에는
죽은 벌 사체가 쌓여있습니다.

야외에서 꿀을 채취하고
다시 벌통으로 돌아와야 할 꿀벌이 때로 실종되거나 집단폐사하는 경우가 속출한 겁니다.

이 농가는 당초 250군 규모로 지어오던 농사를 절반 가량 줄였습니다. 마리 수로 따지면 5백여 마리 입니다.

"250본 정도 가동해야 하는데 올해 120개, 120통 정도 밖에 안 됐어요."
이 같은 피해 상황은 도내 양봉농가 곳곳에서 발생하고 있습니다.제주도가 양봉농가를 대상으로 조사를 벌였는데 전체 4백여 곳 가운데 1/3 가량이 같은 피해를 호소했습니다.

제주도 뿐 아니라 경남 등 일부 남부지역 양봉농가에서도 같은 피해가 발생하고 있는 상황.

기후변화로 인한 병해충 발생과 꿀벌 이상 행동이 원인이 아닐까 추측되고 있을 뿐 명확한 이유는 파악되지 않았습니다.
농림축산부 차원에서 원인 규명에 나섰고
제주도는 농가 피해 회복을 위한 방안을 찾고 있습니다.

"원인이 규명되지 않은 상태에서 협회하고 얘기를 해서 행정적으로 도움될 수 있는지 알아보고 미흡하지만 대응하려고 준비하고 있습니다."

본격적인 봄꿀 채취 기간을
한달 가량 앞두고
죽거나 사라져버리는 벌꿀 피해에
