Maritime Safety Inspection Underway

This ferry, which carries passengers and vehicles between (성산) Seongsan and (우도) Udo slowly enters its berth.
Almost as soon as it has stopped, passengers and vehicles start to poor off its front ramp.


The ferry can carry about 300 people at a time, and with spring weather already here, the number of passengers is rapidly growing.


The Korea Coast Guard recently launched a new series of inspections to prevent maritime accidents.


The KCG inspection team looks into the ferry, enters the bridge, and checks whether the crew has kept up with the required emergency drills.
When it is more closely inspected, it is found that parts of the journal detailing drills are not properly filled out.
The inspection team advises the ferry operator to improve the journal.

Here, too, the KCG inspection team checks every corner of the vessel.


They check carefully whether all the safety and rescue equipment is in its proper place in the case of an emergency, and whether there are sufficient life vests for all the passengers onboard.

These detailed inspections are needed for all maritime vessels as accidents in the water can lead to major casualties.

"보통 저희가 이게 (구명조끼가) 부력이 있는지 확인하고. 비상 시에 혹시나 해상에 빠졌을 때 (조명)등이 잘 들어오는지 눌렀을 때"


특히 선박이나 요트의 경우
사고가 발생하면 큰 인명피해로 이어질 수 있는 만큼
더욱 꼼꼼한 점검이 필요합니다.

"다중이 이용하는 여객선이나 유람선, 요트장 같은 경우에는 이용객 뿐만 아니라 운항자들도 안전 의식을 고취하고 (안전 수칙을) 준수하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다고 생각하고 있습니다. 그런 취지에서 현장을 점검하고 (있습니다.)"

각종 점검 활동을 강화해 나갈 계획입니다.
