Stealth Omicron Surging

In the middle of March, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 exceeded 7,000 a day in Jeju.
That number has recently declined, falling back to the low 2,000s, a range not seen since the beginning of last month.
However, Jeju quarantine authorities are cautious about placing much meaning in this decline.


Instead, they are keeping an eye on a new mutation that continues to spread, while flowing into the island from the mainland.


Omicron has become a dominant strain in Jeju following the Delta variant, and now Stealth Omicron is a growing concern.


The new variant, which is even more transmissible than its highly contagious Omicron sibling, is also spreading quickly on the island.
It accounted for between 30 and 40 percent of newly confirmed cases last week, and officials say it may exceed 50 percent this week.


Stealth Omicron is known to be between 30 and 50 percent more contagious than its Omicron sibling.
Officials say that the recent decline in the number of newly confirmed cases has been slower than expected, and that in the worst case scenario, the number could explode at any time.


Along with the new variant spreading across the island, relaxed social distancing measures and the arrival of the spring outing season are cited as factors in the current state of the pandemic.

한 때 하루 확진자로 7천명대까지 기록했던 제주는
최근 닷새 연속 감소세를 보이며 2천명대 초반까지 떨어졌습니다.

지난달 1일 이후 한달여 만입니다.

하지만 제주 방역당국은 이같은 숫자에 큰 의미를 두지 않고 있습니다.


새로운 변이 확산이 계속해서 이어지고 있고
시기적으로 다소 늦어질 뿐
꾸준히 제주로 유입되고 있기 때문입니다.


실제 델타에 이어 오미크론이 제주에서 우세종으로 자리를 잡더니
이제는
'스텔스 오미크론'이 빠르게 확산되고 있습니다.


제주의 경우
지난주 스텔스 오미크론 감염자가 전체의 30%를 차지하더니
그 속도가 빨라
금주중 50%를 넘어
우세종으로 자리 잡을 것으로 방역당국은 예상하고 있습니다.


스텔스 오미크론의 전파력은

최근 유행 감소 속도가

최악의 경우
