Half Success in Driving Away Selfish Campers

The open spaces near the entrance of (이호) Iho Beach are open no more - they've become a sea of tents.
Cooking utensils and other camping gear are hung here and there, but there is something missing: campers.
The tents are not currently being used and are just holding spaces for later.


These tents here are in no-camping zones, and have been set up for a long time.
They are eyesores to both residents and tourists alike.

They're not nice to look at. These people are using the land like it's theirs, and have been for years.


As complaints have grown over the past years, the city has responded by planting trees to try and nudge campers out.
But as the area is privately-owned land, it's not easy to force them to remove the tents.
Authorities have therefore even started planting camellia trees and wildflowers between them.


Planting trees has been partially successful - it has driven away some of the campers, but others still remain.
These newcomers often squeeze between the newly-planted trees, or else just pull them out.

Bamboo was planted here before. Some fell down for some reason, making a small open space. Then the tents came, and more bamboo was pulled out everyday.


With the popularity of travel within Korea this year growing, the selfish behavior of some campers is eliciting an annoyed, even angry response from many.
And with the actions by authorities not making a real impact, it remains to be seen how things will progress as spring turns to summer and the days become longer and hotter.




해수욕장 알박기…식목으로 해결?



이호 해수욕장 입구 공터에 텐트들이 빼곡히 들어섰습니다.

주위에는 각종 취사 도구들이 널려 있습니다.

하지만 캠핑객은 찾아볼 수 없고 텐트들은 대부분 비어있습니다.

좋은 자리를 선점하기 위해 장기간 쳐 놓은
이른바 '알박기' 텐트들입니다.


야영 구역도 아닌 곳에 버젓이 텐트를 설치하고
오랫동안 걷어가지 않으면서
도민과 관광객들의 눈살을 찌프리게 하고 있습니다.

"일단 미관상으로도 좋지 않구요. 또 개인 소유가 아닌데 개인 소유지 마냥 지금 몇 년째 저러고 있거든요. "

알박기 텐트로 시민들의 불만이 커지자
행정기관에선
몇년 전부터 나무 심기를 통해 대응에 나서고 있습니다.

해당 지역이 사유지여서 텐트를 강제 철거하기가 쉽지 않기 때문입니다.

결국 텐트가 비어 있는 곳곳에 동백나무와 야생화 등을 식재했습니다.


식목을 통해 일부 지역에선 알박기 텐트가 사라졌지만
여전히 불법 텐트가 근절되지는 않고 있습니다.

일부 야영객들이 나무를 비집고 들어가
텐트를 설치하거나
식재된 나무를 뽑아버리는 경우가 적지 않습니다.


"또 있었어요. 전에 대나무도 막 심어놓고 했는데 보시면 있어요.그것도 좀 쓰러져 공간이 넓어지면 거기다 해놔요 매일 몇 개도 뽑혔었고 전에 "


코로나19 여파로 캠핑 등
야외활동을 즐기려는 시민들이 늘고 있는 가운데
이른바 알박기를 통한
장기 텐트들을 막기 위한 다양한 시도가 한계를 보이고 있습니다.
