More with Mask-associated Dry Eyes

Several cases of mask-associated dry eye diseases, which are caused by using a mask for a long time without replacement. Jeju and authorities ask residents to be alert to the diseases.

According to the Jeju National University Hospital (JNUH), the island has been seeing a rise in mask-associated dry eye diseases.

The diseases are more likely to occur for people who wear a mask for a long period of time or wear their mask improperly.

The diseases are caused by oral bacteria that proliferates on the inside of a mask and spreads to the eyes.

JNUH urged residents to replace their masks every day, if possible,
and to make sure that their breath does not come up
to the upper part of their masks.

눈병이 걸리는 사례가 제주에서도 잇따라 발생해 주의가 요구됩니다.

제주대학교병원에 따르면
최근 마스크를 교체하지 않고 쓰거나
잘못된 마스크 사용으로 인한
일명 '마스크 눈병' 사례가 확인됐습니다.

이는 구강 내 세균이
마스크 안쪽에서 증식한 후
눈까지 침투해 발생하는 것으로 알려졌습니다.

병원측은 가급적 매일 마스크를 교체해 사용하고
착용 시에는 입김이 마스크 윗부분으로 올라오지 않도록 점검해야
한다고 당부했습니다.
