Baby Dies while Hospital Treatment

Police are carrying boxes of evidence including medical records from the hospital.

Police have launched an investigation with speculation that the hospital's mistake presumably led to the death of a baby who was hospitalized after being diagnosed with the COVID-19.

The medical error took place on March 12th.

The 12-month-old baby died a day after hospitalization.
At the hospital's own investigation, it was discovered that a drug was overdosed.

According to the hospital, the doctor in charge ordered that epinephrine be administered 5 milligrams through the respiratory tract.
But a nurse administered 5 milligrams of epinephrine directly with intravenous injection and those are excessive.

Soon the nurse reportedly recognized her mistake on the same day and reported it to the supervising nurse.

However, the hospital recognized the medical error four days later to inform the bereaved families of the mistake.

The bereaved family submitted a complaint, and the police are investigating 11 people, including doctors and nurses, on charges of professional negligence.

The police are conducting a search and seizure of the general affairs department and medical records office of the Jeju National University Hospital, and reviewing data including medical records and CCTV video footage of the victim baby.

We're closely reviewing all of the records including medical records, CCTV video footage and daily work journals to understand the situation on the day and to determine the next steps forward.

The hospital says it's cooperating with the police for the investigation as much as possible, saying the reporting of the medical error had been delayed in the process of reporting and did not intend to cover up the incident.

The medication error was found during the self-investigation, so the hospital's executive department gave a detailed explanation to the patient's parents. We sincerely apologize for causing heartbreak to the bereaved families, and Jeju National University Hospital will sincerely cooperate for future police investigations.

Police investigation is focusing on determining who is responsible and seeing measures taken by the hospital were appropriate after the medical mistake happened.

코로나 확진 판정을 받고 입원 치료 중 숨진 영아 사고와 관련해
의료 사고 정황이 포착되면서 경찰이 수사에 나선 겁니다.

사고가 난 시점은 3월 12일.

코로나 확진 판정을 받은 생후 12개월 영아가
병원에 입원해 치료를 받은 지 하루만에 숨졌습니다.

이후 병원의 자체 조사 과정에서
약물을 과다 투여한 정황이 확인됐습니다.

병원에 따르면
당시 담당 의사는
'약물을 호흡기를 통해 5mg 투약하라'고 지시했는데,

간호사가
이를 정맥주사로 직접 투약하면서 과다한 양이 주입됐다는 겁니다.

이후 약을 투여한 간호사는
당일 자신의 실수를 인지해
수간호사에게 보고한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

하지만 병원에서 이 사실을 알게 된 건 나흘 뒤.

뒤늦게 이를 확인해 유족에게 알렸습니다.

결국 유족측은 고소장을 접수했고
경찰은
병원 의사와 간호사 등 11명을
업무상 과실치사 등의 혐의로 입건해 조사하고 있습니다.

경찰은
제주대학교병원 총무과와
의무기록실 등에 대한 압수수색을 진행하고
숨진 영아의 의무 기록과 CCTV 영상 등
관련 자료들을 확보해 살펴보고 있습니다.

"의무 기록이나 CCTV 기록이나 전체 다 봐야죠. 근무 일지라던가 전체 그 당시의 상황을 정확히 파악할 수 있고 그 다음 조처 등에 대해서 볼 수 있는 걸 전반적으로 다 볼 예정입니다."

병원 측은
보고 과정에서 시간이 지연됐을 뿐
사건을 은폐하려는 의도는 없었다며
경찰 조사에 최대한 협조하겠다는 입장입니다.

"자체 조사 진행 중 투약 오류 사고가 발견돼 환자 보호자분들께 자세한 설명을 병원 집행부에서 직접 드렸습니다. 유족 분들에게 너무 큰 상처와 심려를 끼쳐드린 데에 대해 심심한 사과의 말씀을 드리며 이에 제주대학교 병원은 향후 진행되는 경찰 조사에 성심성의를 다해 임할 것을 말씀드립니다."

경찰은 병원 등을 상대로
의료진의 책임소재와
추후 조치 사항 등이 적절했는지 등을 집중 조사하고 있습니다.
