Put Relocation of JNU’s College of Education on the Track Again


The newly elected president of Jeju National University, (김일환) Kim Il-hwan, is pushing forward with the relocation of the college of education in (화북동) Hwabuk-dong to the school’s main campus in (아라동) Ara-dong.


The relocation has been under review since 2016 as a key pledge of former president (허향진) Heo Hyang-jin, but progress has been sluggish due to opposition from students at the college of education.


However, the newly-elected president said, "Unlike before, members of the college have reached a consensus on the relocation." adding that he will do his best to secure national funds for the relocation cost estimated at around 50 billion won.

Members of the main campus in Ara-dong are absolutely in favor of the relocation and recently members of the college of education are in agreement. Now, the surrounding atmosphere is all ripe and the key is the budget, but we are preparing to bring the national treasury and move it.


He also said his office will make all-out efforts to boost student creativity required by society in the 21st century.
And he said his office will build a high-tech education infrastructure to actively cope with environmental changes such as a decrease in the school-age population and the fourth industrial revolution.


He stressed that he will reduce the burden on tuition fees and create an environment where professors can focus only on research and lectures.


His office will operate a financial expansion team under the direct control of the president to secure 40 billion won in university development funds by the year 2025.
One of his plans is to raise the global ranking of the university from its current 1,200th place to higher than 800 in four years.

First, we have to change. We are planning to create programs for co-prosperity with the world of academia, research, students, and local communities to pursue breakthrough changes in the four areas mentioned so that the university with a 70-year history can be reborn.

In addition, his office plans to strengthen the medical services and educational functions of the university’s hospital, and reproduce the former university main building located in (용담)Yongdam on the main campus in (아라동) Ara-dong to use it as a landmark.


President Kim will lead Jeju National University, which marks its 70th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of its promotion to a general university, for four years.

"교육대학 아라캠퍼스로 이전"…재정확보 관건

교육대학의 아라캠퍼스 이전은
허향진 전 총장의 핵심 공약으로
지난 2016년부터 검토돼 왔지만
교육대학 학생들의 반발로 지지부진합니다.


하지만 김 총장은 이전과 달리 교육대학 구성원들도
캠퍼스 이전에 공감대를 이뤘다며
5백억원대로 추산되는 이전비용에 대한 국비 절충에
최선을 다하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

"아라캠퍼스 구성원은 절대적으로 찬성하고 있고 최근에 사라캠퍼스 구성원들도 동의하고 있습니다. 이제는 주변 분위기는 다 무르익고 (관건은) 예산부분인데 국고 절충해서 반드시 이전할 수 있도록 준비하고 있습니다. "


21세기 사회가 요구하는 창의인재 양성에도 총력을 기울입니다.


학령인구 감소와 4차 산업혁명 등
환경 변화에 능동적으로 대처하기 위해
첨단 교육 인프라를 구축하겠다고 밝혔습니다.


특히 학생들의 학비 부담을 줄이고
교수들이
연구와 교육에만
매진할 수 있는 환경 조성을 강화하겠다고 강조했습니다.


이를 위해 오는 2025년까지 대학 발전기금 400억원을 확보하기 위해
총장 직할로 가칭 재정확충전략팀을 운영하기로 했습니다.

이를 통해 현재 1천 200위권의 세계대학 영향력 평가를
4년 이후에는 8백위권으로 끌어올리겠다는 구상입니다.

종합대학 승격 40주년을 맞은 제주대의
새로운 변화를 이끌어갈 김 총장의 임기는 4년입니다.
