Moth Invasion Damages Crops in Jeju

Turnip moths that damage crops, such as corns and millets are flowing into Jeju for the first time and arel causing damage to farms on the island.

According to the Jeju Agricultural Technology Center, adult turnip moths were found in Samdal-ri, Seongsan-eup and Suwon-ri, Hallim-eup.

Turnip moths come to Korea on the westerlies in Spring. They nibble away crops such as corn and millet.

In particular, as super sweet corn will be harvested in the beginning of next month, serious damage by the insect is expected, stressing the need for strict monitoring and prompt pest control.



'열대거세미나방' 첫 발견…각종 작물 피해 우려

옥수수나 기장 등 각종 작물에 막대한 피해를 주는
'열대거세미나방'이 올들어 처음 제주에 유입돼 농가 피해가 우려되고 있습니다.

제주도농업기술원에 따르면
최근 성산읍 삼달리와 한림읍 수원리 일대에서
'열대거세미나방' 성충이 잇따라 발견됐습니다.

열대거세미나방은 봄철 편서풍을 타고 국내로 유입돼
옥수수나 기장 등의 작물을 갉아먹으며 막대한 피해를 주고 있습니다.

특히 다음달 상순 수확기를 앞둔 초당옥수수의 경우
큰 피해가 우려되고 있어 철저한 예찰과 신속한 방제가 강조되고 있습니다.
