Spectacular Display on Summer Nights


The forest is dark and deep.
Soft green glowing lights are flickering.
They are coming from light-emitting bugs that are highly sensitive to the environment.

A cluster of fireflies twinkle like stars in the darkened forest.
The summer light show is spectacular.
The lightning bugs communicate with light pulses.

Each blinking pattern is an optical signal that helps the insects find potential mates.

The presence of fireflies is considered to be a good biological indicator of an unpolluted and healthy environment as the insects are highly sensitive to the environment.

While their numbers are decreasing all over the country, the lightning insects are observed in some (곶자왈) Gotjawal forests every year.


Gotjawal forests have high humidity and are far from villages, which provides a good habitat to fireflies that love wet areas, but hate light pollution.


The population has decreased because this early summer is drier than normal summers.

The humidity is relatively low this summer from dry weather. That means there aren't as many dead moth carcesses or slugs as there used to be.


Fireflies emerge at night to glow softly in Gotjawal forests.

The lightning bugs give us a spectacular display at early summer nights every year.



'여름밤의 별'…곶자왈 반딧불이 '환상'

짙은 어둠이 깔린 곶자왈 숲속.

반짝 반짝,
전구에 불을 켠 듯
작고 노란 불빛이 깜빡 입니다.

청정 지역에서만 서식하는 야광곤충, 반딧불이 입니다.


반딧불이가 숲속 곳곳에서 불을 밝히자
마치 밤하늘의 별을 보듯
황홀한 분위기를 자아냅니다.

빛으로 말하는 반딧불이.


짝찟기 시기를 맞아
암수가 깜빡감빡 빛을 내며
서로를 유혹하는 겁니다.


반딧불이는
청정 환경 지표로 불릴만큼
서식 환경에 민감합니다.

반딧불이가 발견된 다는 건,
그만큼 생태적으로 매우 청정하다는 의미입니다.


이제는 반딧불이는 쉽게 보긴 어려워 졌지만
매년 이맘 때 쯤,
제주시 한경면 등
일부 곶자왈에서 모습을 보이고 있습니다.


곶자왈은 민가로 부터 멀리 떨어져 있고
습도가 높아 반딧불이가
서식하기 좋은 조건을 갖췄기 때문입니다.


하지만 올해 초여름은 비교적 가물었던 탓에
개체수는 예년 보다 줄었습니다.

"올해는 가뭄이 들어서 (곶자왈) 안이 습하지 않아요. 그래서 반딧불이의 먹이인 죽은 나방 사체나 민달팽이가 좀 예전처럼 많지 않아서..."
