AC Fire Hazard Caution


Outside a building, an outdoor air conditioner unit is found charred and its fan blades melted.
The taped air conditioner wire has melted and broken apart.
This is the site of an air conditioner fire at a house in (조천읍) Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.

Across the nation, air conditioners have accounted for approximately 1,100 fires over the last five years.
On Jeju, there have been about two cases reported annually. They happened in the summer season between the months of June and August.

According to an analysis of the causes of air conditioner fires from 2017 to 2021, electrical problems accounted for 75.4 percent of these fires.


The main causes of fire are when water seeps into the wire connections, or when the connection becomes loose while the outdoor unit is in operation.


This is an experiment conducted by the Jeju Fire Department.
As the air conditioner runs, heat is detected at the splice point of the cord between the indoor and outdoor units.
Soon the temperature reaches 150 degrees Celsius and in an instant is in flames.


The experiment shows that if the wires do not meet certain specifications, the connection between the indoor and outdoor units can overheat and catch fire.
Fire department experts say that when installing an air conditioner, it is important to use wires that meet proper specifications, and that the connection should be firmly secured by using a compression sleeve.

As the connection becomes loose, heat is generated. Insulation tape or wires melt, causing a fire. You can use equipment such as wire sleeves or wire connectors to finish those connections safely.

"(연결 부위가) 느슨해지면서 거기서 열이 발생하고 그 열로 인해서 절연 테이프나 전선이 녹으면서 화재가 종종 일어나고 있습니다. 그런 연결 부위 마감을 할 때 전선 (연결) 슬리브나 전선 커넥터 같은 기구를 사용하시면 더 안전하게 사용할 수 있습니다."

연일 무더위 속 에어컨 화재 '주의'

건물 밖 에어컨 실외기가 검게 그을리고
날개는 녹아내렸습니다.

테이프로 감아둔 에어컨 전선은
불에 녹아 끊어졌습니다.

제주시 조천읍의 한 주택에서 발생한 에어컨 화재 현장입니다.

최근 5년 사이 전국에서 발생한 에어컨 화재는 1천 1백여 건.

제주에서도 매년 2건 정도가 발생했는데,
여름철인 6월부터 8월 사이에 집중 발생했습니다.


지난 2017년부터 최근까지 발생한
에어컨 화재 원인을 분석한 결과
전기적 요인이 75.4%로 대부분을 차지했습니다. (75.4%)


전선끼리 꼬아서 연결해 둔 부분에 물이 묻거나
실외기가 돌아가며
연결 부위가 느슨해지면서 불이 나는 겁니다.


실제로 관련 실험을 진행해봤습니다.

에어컨이 작동되고
실내외기 연결 부분에 열이 감지됩니다.

얼마 후, 순식간에
섭씨 150도 씨까지 열이 오르며 불길이 치솟습니다.

실험 결과, 에어컨 실내외기 연결부의
전선 규격이 맞지 않을 경우
높은 열이 발생하면서
화재로 이어지는 것이 확인됐습니다.

이에 따라 소방당국은 에어컨을 설치할 경우
반드시 규격에 맞는 배선을 사용하고,

전선 간 연결 부위는
압착슬리브를 사용해 단단히 고정해야 한다고 당부했습니다.

최근 폭염으로 인해
에어컨 사용량이 늘어나는 가운데
화재도 잇따르고 있는 만큼 각별한 주의가 요구됩니다.
