Too Hot for Watermelons


(신엄리) Sineom-ri, Aewol-eup is noted as being one of the biggest watermelon producers in Jeju.
Farmers are busy harvesting on a field full of watermelons wrapped in newspaper.

Watermelons have ripened quickly, as the summer heat came earlier this year.

Watermelon plants love the heat. But this year’s earlier sweltering heat impedes the fruit’s growth.
Fewer numbers of the crop are being shipped to the market as the flesh ripens without growing large enough.

The appropriate temperature for outdoor watermelons is 28 degrees Celsius. But this year, the daytime high has risen to 30 or more degrees since the end of June. It slows down growth.

A long spell of droughts and high temperatures can cause sunscald and rot inside.
This is why farmers are worried even though the watermelon price is expected to be set high as the demand is increasing.

The recent heat wave increases the demand for watermelons. Meanwhile, the overall crop is worse than last year due to the heat wave and drought.

The Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services advises watermelon growers to wrap the fruit with newspapers to prevent sunscald as hot weather is expected to continue for the time being.




가뭄·더위에 수박 농가도 비상


제주 수박의 60%를 생산하는 애월읍 신엄리.

신문지에 싸놓은 수박이 밭 위에 가득합니다.

이른 더위 탓에 빨리 익은 수박을 농민들이 분주하게 수확하고 있습니다


수박은 원래 더워야 잘 자라는 작물이지만
올해는 더워도 너무 더운 날씨에 생육이 오히려 더딘 편입니다.

크기가 충분히 크지 못한 채
속이 다 익어버리면서
상품 비율이 많이 줄었습니다.

"노지 수박의 경우에는 적정 온도 28도 정도가 유지돼야 생육에 좋은데 올해 같은 경우는 6월 말부터 낮 온도가 30도가 넘게 올라서 생육에 지장을 초래하는 상황이…."


여기에 계속된 가뭄과 고온에 버티지 못하고
줄기가 까맣게 올라오며 안이 썩어버리는 피해도 발생하고 있습니다.

수요가 크게 늘면서 좋은 가격을 받을 것으로 예상되지만
농민들의 걱정이 여전한 이윱니다.

"아무래도 요즘 폭염이어서 소비는 좀 많은 편입니다. 전반적인 작황은 작년에 비해 좀 안 좋습니다. 폭염이랑 가뭄으로 인해서 작황은 전년에 비해 좀 안 좋은 상황입니다."


농업기술원은
당분간 계속 더운 날씨가 이어질 것으로 예상되는 만큼
수박을 신문지로 싸는 등
일사 피해가 발생하지 않도록 주의해 줄 것을 당부했습니다.
