Text Message Phishing Scams Increase

Even when sent from an unfamiliar number, a well-crafted phishing message can find a way to break through someone’s defenses.
This one tells the user that their phone is broken.
The message starts with ‘Mom,’ and says the sender can be contacted only by text.
However, the individual behind this message is no child, but a phishing criminal.


On June 30th, two foreigners were arrested on charges of being involved in a text message phishing scam by impersonating a child to steal money.


They were accused of linking 15 domestic mobile phone numbers with computers, being operated outside the country, to send phishing text messages.


In order to avoid the police, the two carried burner phones in a vehicle to try and cause confusion on their whereabouts by constantly moving between cell towers. But they were eventually apprehended.


According to the police investigation, more than 10,000 phishing messages were sent in June.


The police arrested the two suspects on charges of violating the Telecommunications Business Act and attempted fraud. They will be prosecuted soon.


Text-based phishing scams, which aim to steal personal information or money by impersonating others, often family members, are increasing.
The scammer will pretend to be someone close to the victim and then ask for money or payment information, including ID card details, under the pretext of mobile phone repair costs.


There are upwards of 200 cases of such phishing scams reported in Jeju every year, and this year, there were already 150 cases reported from January to June.
The amount of money being scammed is also rapidly increasing.

If you receive a message claiming the sender’s mobile phone is broken and they are contacting you via a temporary number, be wary. If they ask for payment information, like ID card or credit card details, or request to install a remote control app, you should call the number or meet the sender in person so as not to be scammed.


The most important thing one can do to protect themselves against a text message phishing scam is always to be wary of unknown numbers. The police advise to never share any personal information with such numbers, and not to click on any included URLs.

친근한 말투로 엄마라 부르며 문자로만 연락할 수 있다고 합니다.

하지만 문자를 보낸 사람은
자녀가 아닌
메신저 피싱범입니다.


지난달 30일, 자녀를 사칭해
돈을 빼돌리는 메신저 피싱에 가담한 혐의로
외국인 2명이 구속됐습니다.

이들은 국내 휴대전화 15대를
해외 컴퓨터와 연동해
피싱 문자 메시지가 발송되도록 한 혐의를 받고 있습니다.


경찰의 추적을 피하기 위해
휴대 전화를 차량에 싣고 다니며
기지국에 혼선을 주기도 했지만 결국 덜미를 잡혔습니다.


경찰 조사결과
피의자들이 가지고 있던 휴대전화로
6월 한 달 사이 발송된 피싱 메시지는 무려 1만 건이 넘습니다.


경찰은 피의자 2명을
전기통신사업법 위반과
사기 미수 등의 혐의로 구속하고 검찰에 송치했습니다.


최근 가족 등을 사칭해
메신저로 개인정보나 돈을 가로채는
이른바 메신저 피싱이 늘어나고 있습니다.

자녀인 척 연락한 뒤
휴대전화 수리비 등을 핑계로
돈이나 신분증 등
결제정보를 보내달라고 하는 겁니다.

제주에서도 매년 200건에 이르는 피해가 발생하고 있는데,

올들어서는 6개월 만에 150건이 넘게 발생하며
피해가 급증하고 있습니다.

"휴대전화가 고장 나서 임시번호로 연락하고 있다는 메시지를 받고 상대방으로부터 신분증, 신용카드 번호 등 결제정보를 요구받거나 원격 조정 애플리케이션 설치를 요구받는 경우에는 반드시 상대방과 전화 통화하거나 직접 만나서 누구인지 확인하셔서 (피싱) 범죄 피해를 예방하는 것이 중요합니다."


피싱 피해를 막기 위해서는
개인정보가 유출되지 않는 것이 가장 중요하다며,
경찰은
문자메시지에 포함된 URL을
누르지 말아야 한다고 조언합니다.
