167 Addional April 3rd Victims Identified

Additional identifications of convicted victims of the April 3rd incident have been confirmed.

The province said it compared the list of convicted and 4.3 victim data to cross check whether their names or origins matched. In-depth investigations were conducted and from the process 167 additional convicted victims were identified.

So far, out of the 2,530 people sentenced to date,
a total of 2,293 have been identified.

Most of the unmatch was due to incorrect personal identification. However, some cases were found reported due to concerns of stigma by guild.

Meanwhile, the joint review team of the jeju 4.3 case is expected to file a retrial after reviewing the 167 cases.

4.3 수형인 명부에 있는 군사재판 수형인 신원이 추가로 확인됐습니다.

제주도는 수형자 명부와 4.3희생자 자료를 비교해 이름이나 본적 일치 여부를 확인하고 당시 진술이나 이명, 아명 등을 심층 조사해 모두 167명의 수형인 신원을 추가로 찾았다고 밝혔습니다.

이로써 현재까지 군사재판 수형인 2천 530명 가운데
신원이 확인된 수형인은 모두 2천 293명 입니다.

특히 이번 신원 확인 과정에서
수형인명부에 기재된 수형인의 성명과 연령, 본적이 잘못됐거나 연좌제 피해를 우려해 희생자 신고를 하지 않은 사례로 확인됐습니다.

한편,제주 4.3사건 직권재심 합동수행단은
이번에 추가로 신원이 확인된 167명의 수형인에 대한 검토를 거친 뒤
재심 청구를 진행할 전망입니다.
