Population Rise…Regional Imbalance


Jeju’s population is set to surpass 700,000 for the first time since statistics were compiled.

The population stood at 584,000 in 2012, and exceeded 600,000 for the first time in 2014, and now it stands at more than 699,000.

Among them, 678,000 are Koreans and 20,000 are non-Koreans.

Migrants from the mainland have driven the growth of Jeju's population amid the nation’s lowest recorded birth rate.
Last year, the total birth rate in Jeju fell below 1 for the first time.


Although the population is on the verge of 700,000 people, the population imbalance by region is getting worse.

Jeju City's population accounts for more than 70 percent of the total population.
Meanwhile, the population of Seogwipo City is less than 30 percent of the total.

The regionally imbalanced population is largely affected by infrastructure imbalances such as jobs, transportation, entertainment, and medical facilities.

Transportation to Seogwipo is inconvenient. Seogwipo is rather a tourist city, not a place to work for me. Life is easier in Jeju City.


To resolve the regional imbalance, governor Oh Young-hoon pledged during the election to reorganize the public transportation system to create a so-called ‘15-Minute City’ that allows all islanders to enjoy daily life services within 15 minutes of their homes and strengthen the functions of the townships in rural areas.
Islanders are paying attention to future policies that his office will formulate to ease the imbalance.




인구 70만명 돌파 '눈앞'…지역별 편중 '심각'


제주도 인구가 통계 작성 이후 처음으로 70만명 돌파를 앞두고 있습니다.

지난 2012년 58만4천명이던 제주인구는 2014년 처음 60만명을 넘어선 이후
10년 만에 69만 9천여명을 기록했습니다.

이 가운데 내국인이 67만 8천명을 차지했고 외국인도 2만명을 넘고 있습니다.

저출산 문제 속에 이주민들이 제주 인구 증가를 견인했습니다.

지난해 제주지역 합계출산율이 처음으로 1 밑으로 떨어져 역대 최저치를 기록했습니다.

인구 70만명을 목전에 두고 있지만 지역별 인구 편중 현상은 갈수록 심화되고 있습니다.

제주시 인구가 제주도 전체 인구의 70% 이상을 차지했습니다.

서귀포시 인구는
전체 인구의 30%에도 미치지 않고 있습니다.

이 같은 지역별 인구 편중 현상은
일자리와 교통, 문화,
의료기관 등 인프라 불균형 영향이 크다는 분석입니다.

"(취업은) 제주시 쪽에 선택을 할 것 같고 이유가 아무래도 제주시 쪽에 사람이 많이 몰려 있고 사람이 많이 몰렸으니까 일자리도 몰려 있고. "

"서귀포시로 넘어가는 교통편도 불편하기도 하고 서귀포시는 약간 관광도시 이런 이미지가 강하니까 제주시는 생활하기도 편하고. "


이 같은 지역 불균형 해소를 위해 오영훈 도지사는
선거기간 집에서 15분 거리 내에 생활서비스를 누릴 수 있도록 하는 '15분 도시' 조성을 위한 대중교통 체계 개편과
생활권별 인구 분산을 위한 읍면지역 기능 강화 구상을 밝힌바 있어 향후 내놓게 될 정책에 관심이 쏠리고 있습니다.
