Drop in Cucumber Production
These creeping vines are loaded with crisp cucumbers.
The fruit has been growing from seedlings over the course of a month and are now being harvested.
Cucumber stems grow very fast, so they can be harvested every day for about two months.
The fruit is cultivated twice a year at this farm. The crop is quite profitable.
However, cucumbers are not that easy to grow as the plant requires a lot of careful attention.
Unfortunately, this year’s production has plunged due to cloudy conditions and disease.

The quantity has decreased a lot because of low sunlight from the recent heavy rain and virus infection.
A box of 10 kilograms of cucumbers sells for 49,000 won at the wholesale market.
With fewer cucumbers to sell, prices have nearly doubled.
But even though prices have risen, problems with production have inevitably led to losses for farmers.

There are thrips in the soil due to years of cucumber farming, and they will appear at some point. The most important thing right now is to desiccate the bug and its larvae.
The Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Service is advising cucumber farmers to take steps to eradicate pests like thrips in the soil and on the plant’s leaves, especially now when hot weather and rainy conditions have yet to ease up.
시설 오이 수확 한창…생산량 '뚝'
덩굴사이로 주렁주렁 달린 오이를 수확합니다.
지난달 정식한 이후 한달 사이 출하가 가능할만큼 훌쩍 자랐습니다.
계속해서 줄기를 타고 올라오는 오이는 생육속도가 매우 빨라서
약 두달간 매일 수확이 가능합니다.
1년에 두번 오이 재배에 나서는 이 농가는 연중재배로 높은 소득을 창출하고 있습니다.
하지만 관리가 까다로워 재배하기가 쉽지만은 않습니다.
최근에는 부족한 일조량과 바이러스 확산으로
생산량이 크게 줄어 걱정입니다.

비가 많이 와서 일조량이 없으니까 오이가 착과가 안돼서 수량이 많이 줄었어요. 또 오이에 바이러스가 많이 걸려서….
최근 오이 경매 가격은 10kg 한박스에 4만 9천 원.
줄어든 생산량에 가격은 2배 가까이 올랐습니다.
가격은 올랐지만 크게 떨어진 생산량으로 농가에 손해가 이어질수밖에 없는 상황입니다.

연작을 많이 해서 지금 토양 속에 총채벌레가 있다가 어느 시기에 발현됩니다. 그래서 지금 최대 관건이 총채벌레를 잘 예방하는 게 (중요합니다.)
농업기술원은 기온이 높고 비가 길게 이어지는 요즘같은 날씨에
총채벌레 피해가 커질 수 있다며 꼼꼼하고 지속적인 방제를 당부했습니다.
