April 3rd Incident Covered in Elementary School Textbooks


This is a social studies textbook for the fifth grade of elementary school next year.
The parts dealing with the April 3rd Incident are noticed.

Starting next year, some elementary school textbooks will cover the April 3rd Incident.
With the reorganization of the curriculum made in 2020, the incident became included in Korean history textbooks for high schools.

From next year, the tragic event will be included in some social studies textbooks for the second semester of the fifth grade of elementary schools.
However, it doesn’t appear to be enough.

Out of the 11 textbooks currently under development, only four deal with the April 3rd Incident.
They include only a half-page to one-page-long description because the incident is not included in the national level curriculum of social studies for elementary schools.


It is also pointed out that a textbook uses the term "communist forces", which could attempt to justify the massacre by state violence.


Experts say that the volume that deals with the incident should be expanded to properly understand the truth of it from various perspectives, and emphasize that the incident should be included in the national level curriculum of social studies for elementary schools.

The April 3rd Incident is one of the important events in Korean modern history. The event should be covered in all social studies textbooks. Then students across the country will be able to properly learn the truth of the incident.


As April 3rd has been designated as a national memorial day and the approach to the tragic incident is drawing attention as a model of reconciliation and co-prosperity, learning about the history at schools is being treated with greater value.



내년 초등 교과서에 '제주 4·3' 실린다


내년 초등학교 5학년 사회 검정교과서입니다.

내년부터
일부 초등학교 검정교과서에 제주 4.3사건에 대한 내용이 실립니다.

지난 2020년
교육과정이 개편되면서 현재는 고등학교 한국사 교과서에서만 4.3이 다뤄지고 있는데,

내년부터는 초등학교 5학년 2학기 일부 사회 교과서에도 실리게 되는 겁니다.

하지만 아쉬운 점도 여전합니다.

현재 개발된
내년 검정 교과서 전시본 11개 가운데
제주 4.3이 서술된 건 단 4개.

이 조차도 반 페이지에서 한 페이지 분량에 그치고 있습니다.

초등 사회과 국가수준교육과정에
제주 4.3이 포함돼 있지 않기 때문입니다.

또 특정 교과서에는
'공산주의 세력'이라는 용어를 사용하면서
국가폭력에 의한 제주도민의 학살을 정당화할 여지를 준다는
지적도 일고 있습니다.

특히 다양한 관점에서
4.3의 진실을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 서술 분량을 확대하고,
초등 사회과 국가수준교육과정에 제주 4.3을 포함시켜야 한다고 강조했습니다.

4.3을 우리 역사의 한 페이지로 다루는 교육과정으로 공부를 해야 우리 대한민국 역사를 제대로 알릴 수 있는 그런 (교육이) 될 것 같고요. 그렇게 되면 전국의 학생들이 제주 4.3을, 그 진실을 제대로 배울 수 있다고 생각합니다.

4월 3일이 국가추념일로 지정돼 있는데다
근현대사의 비극 가운데 화해와 상생의 모델로 주목받고 있는 만큼
학교에서의 내실 있는 교육이 더욱 강조되고 있습니다.
