Seogwipo Port Likely to Welcome Vessels Soon



This is the passenger terminal at Seogwipo Port which was newly built back in June 2012.
The facility has been closed for years.

The port has welcomed no vessels since its completion.
But recently there are signs of change.


A shipping company, which has the right to operate the ferry terminal, expressed its willingness to begin service between Seogwipo and a port on the mainland.
The facility is currently under repair.


Aging and damaged floors and ceilings that weren’t properly managed have been replaced.
Sections of the terminal that were built a decade ago but no longer usable were demolished, and a facility for a convenience store has been newly added.


The shipping company is planning to complete the repair work before the end of the year, and consult with the province on its business plan.

We are making efforts to ensure that our new service will vitalize the tourism industry and boost the local economy. From this perspective, we will be in consultation with the province.


The ferry terminal at Seogwipo Port was built in 2012 with a total floor area of 663 square meters. It was to handle passenger ships between Seogwipo Port and (녹동) Nokdong Port in (고흥) Goheung-gun, South (전라) Jeolla Province.
The shipping company poured about 1.2 billion won into the facility, and Seogwipo City spent about 300 million won to create parking lots.

However, the reasons for past failures loom large. The province and the shipping company have yet to agree on fuel subsidies. Other issues and tragedies of the previous decade, such as the sinking of the Sewol ferry, and drops in passenger numbers due to MERS and the THAAD crisis, remain fresh in people’s minds.


All eyes will be on whether the revived passenger terminal at Seogwipo Port will encounter calm or stormy conditions going forward.




서귀포항 여객터미널, 10년 만에 활용방안 찾나



지난 2012년 6월 지어진 서귀포항 여객선터미널.

수년째 문이 굳게 닫힌 채 운영되지 않고 있습니다.

준공된 이후 단 한 차례의 여객선 취항도 이뤄지지 않으면서
무용지물 신세로 전락했습니다.

하지만 최근 변화의 조짐을 보이고 있습니다.

여객선터미널 운영권을 갖고 있는 해운사가
사업 추진 의지를 밝히며
시설 보수공사에 나선 것입니다.

관리 손길이 미치지 않아 노후화됐던 바닥과 화장실을 비롯해
물이 새던 천장까지 새롭게 교체됐습니다.

10년의 세월이 흐르면서
필요가 없어진 부대시설들은 철거됐고
한편에는
편의점이 들어섰습니다.

해당 해운사는
올 연말까지 시설 공사를 마무리하고
본격적인 여객선 취항을 목표로
제주도와 협의에 나설 예정입니다.

여객에 대한 사업 추진 부분들을 우리가 하나하나 도와 협의를 해서 여객이 진행되면 우리 서귀포항이 관광 활성화 명분이나 지역경제 시너지 효과가 조금이라도 있을 수 있도록 노력을 하고 있으니깐 (많은 관심과 격려 부탁드린다.)

당초 서귀포항 여객선터미널은
서귀포항과
전라남도 고흥군 녹동항을 오가는
여객선 취항을 위해 연면적 663㎡ 규모로 지어졌습니다.

해당 해운사가 12억원 가량을 투자했고
서귀포시에서도
약 3억원을 들여 주차장 등을 조성했습니다.

그럼에도 유류비 지원 문제로 해당 여객선 취항이 무산되고
이후에 세월호 참사와
메르스, 사드 사태 등으로
사업성이 떨어지면서
여객선 유치에 번번이 실패했습니다.

10년동안 활용되지 못하며 애물단지 신세로 전락했던
서귀포항 여객터미널이
뒤늦게나마 제역할을 찾을 수 있을 지 주목되고 있습니다.
