AI Sorts Out Fruits
It’s picking season for this year’s orchard-grown mandarins.
The harvested fruit is sent to a sorting and packing plant before being distributed to the market.
But the busy harvest season brings with it some issues - namely a shortage of labor. Packing plants are seeing this first hand, due mainly to the aging of rural communities and a decrease in the number of experienced workers.
A mandarin sorting machine that uses artificial intelligence was recently introduced at a sorting facility run by the Seogwipo Office of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation.
The machine’s 18 cameras take 540 images per second to identify and separate any fruit marred by defects, like splits or pest damage.
The AI sorting machine can screen 33,000 fruit per hour - making it 33 times more efficient when compared with an experienced worker.
The number of human employees sorting the fruit here has decreased from eight to two since the machine was introduced.
The AI machine also offers data on the ratio of qualified and defective fruit for each farmer.

Before the AI sorting machine was introduced, we had complaints about fruit quality. But now our screening accuracy is 99.8%, meaning we’ve increased the quality of the fruit we’re shipping. We’re hearing good things from consumers.
The Korea Agricultural Technology Promotion Agency, which developed the AI sorting machine in collaboration with a high-tech company, plans to deploy the machine to ten fruit sorting plants in Jeju next year.

Reliability is very important, and so we plan to support not only technological development, but also the areas necessary for farmers to secure the market so they can enter it with security.
Attention is focused on whether the new AI sorting machine can help solve the mandarin labor shortage, as well as ensure the delivery of only the highest-quality fruit.

올해산 노지감귤 수확이 한창입니다.
수확된 감귤은 선과장으로 옮겨져
선별 작업을 거친 뒤 소비시장에 나갑니다.
하지만 고령화와 숙련된 선별 인력의 감소로
해마다 감귤 출하 시기만 되면 선과장들은 인력난을 겪고 있습니다.
이런 가운데 인공지능(AI)을 활용한 감귤 선별기가
주산지인
서귀포농협 농산물산지유통센터에 도입돼 눈길을 끌고 있습니다.
AI 선별기는
카메라 18대가 초당 540장의 사진을 찍어
균열과 흠집,
착색 불량, 병해충 감염 등
상품성이 떨어지는 감귤을 골라냅니다.
AI 선별기는 1시간 동안 감귤 3만3천개를 선별해
숙련된 전문가에 비해
최대 33배까지 효율이 높습니다.
실제 서귀포농협 농산물산지유통센터는
기존 8명의 숙련가가 작업을 했으나
선별기 설치 후
2명으로 줄었습니다.
또 AI 선별기는 감귤을 골라내는 데 그치지 않고
농가별 상품 비중과
불량 원인을 수치화해
영농 작업의 참고자료를 제공합니다.

(예전에는) 소비시장에 보냈을 때 상품성에 불만을 제기하는 부분도 있었습니다. 그런데 AI를 설치한 뒤에는 선별 정확도가 99.8%로 돼있어서 지금은 리스크들이 많이 없어져 소비자들로부터 좋은 반응을 얻고 있습니다.
벤처기업과 함께 AI 선별기를 개발한
한국농업기술진흥원은
내년 제주지역
선과장 10곳에 시스템을 확대 설치할 계획입니다.

1차산업 인력난 해소와 고품질 감귤 유통에
기여할 수 있을지 주목됩니다.
