Most shops are empty and quiet.
Merchants are waiting for shoppers all day long, but not even a single item sells in an hour.

Shoppers don't come. On the worst days, merchants just sit and talk, and sell items worth about only thousands of won.
The (중앙) Jungang Underground Shopping Center is the same story.
With fewer visitors, the center’s past reputation for shopping attractions has been lost.
Shoppers hesitate to make purchases due to rising prices.
The local economy is struggling as consumption shrinks in the wake of high interest rates and high prices.
According to the Small Enterprise and Market Service, Jeju’s Business Service Index, or BSI, for small businesses is 79.6 this month, down 9.3 points from last month.
The BSI for traditional markets fell 19.6 points from last month to 75.5, the second lowest among 17 cities and provinces across the country after (광주) Gwangju.
When the BSI is above 100, more than 50 percent of people think the economy will improve, and if it is below 100, more than 50 percent think it will worsen.
Small business owners and traditional market merchants say falling consumption and rising prices and interest rates are the main reasons for the economic downturn.

As interest rates go up, purchasing power drops significantly. I'm worried that this will continue until the end of the year. A year-end boost is unlikely.
For now, Jeju’s economy looks like it will be weathering more high prices and interest rates, with a severe chill in money circulation.
돈맥경화에 지역경제 벌써 '한파'
서문공설시장입니다.
대다수 가게가 텅 비어 썰렁한 분위기까지 풍깁니다.
상인들이
하염없이 손님을 기다려보지만
한 시간 동안 물건 1개를 팔기도 어려운 실정입니다.

재래시장에 사람이 안 들어와. 그럴 때는 상인들끼리만 앉아서 이야기하다가 (손님이) 오면 하루 몇천 원어치 팔고 그렇게 들어가요.
제주중앙지하상가도 상황은 마찬가지.
방문객들의 발길이 줄어
과거 쇼핑 명소의 명성은 오간데 없습니다.
간간이 찾아오는 손님도
오른 물가 탓에 선뜻 구매에 나서지 못합니다.
고금리와 고물가 여파로 소비가 위축되면서
지역경제가 어려움을 겪고 있습니다.
소상공인시장진흥공단에 따르면
이달 제주지역 소상공인 전망 경기지수는 79.6으로
지난달보다 9.3포인트 하락했습니다.
이와 함께 전통시장 전망 경기지수는
지난달과 비교해
19.6포인트 떨어진 75.5로
전국 17개 시도 가운데 광주에 이어 두 번째로 낮았습니다.
지수가 100 이상이면
경기가 호전될 것이라고 보는 사람이 더 많고
100 미만이면
악화될 것이라고 보는 사람이 더 많다는 뜻입니다.
소상공인과 전통시장 상인들은
소비 감소,
물가와 금리 상승 등을
경기 악화의 주된 이유로 꼽았습니다.

이자가 오르다 보니깐 구매력이 많이 떨어졌어요. 연말까지도 이게 연장돼서 이어질까봐 걱정이죠. 연말에는 특수 상황도 없을 것 같아요.
