Supply-Demand Mismatch for Yellowtails


Yellowtails swim vigorously in this temporary ocean-based storage facility.
Most of them are one meter in length and categorized as large-sized yellowtails.

This year's yellowtail season has begun. There’s a fishing ground now formed off the coast of Marado Island.

This month, between 25 and 40 vessels have been in operation, and some 5,500 yellowtails have been caught thus far.
That’s nearly twice the catch from the same period last year.
But with fewer people buying this local fish, prices are falling short of fishermen's expectations.

This month, the price of large-sized yellowtail is 47,000 won, down 42 percent from 81,000 won during the same period last year.
The price of extra-large and medium-sized yellowtails has halved since last year.

Sluggish sales even led to yellowtail fishing operations being suspended last week from the 9th to the 13th.

Experts say that consumption of Jeju yellowtail has shrunk due the continued economic downturn and a significant increase in catches in (강원) Gangwon Province.
This year's decline in yellowtail prices and sluggish consumption are all the more painful for fishermen burdened by sky-high fuel costs.

Given the current situation, local fishermen have high expectations for a boost in sales from the upcoming 22nd Southernmost Yellowtail Festival that kicks off on 26th at Moseulpo Port.

본격적인 방어철…'풍요 속 빈곤'


해상에 조성된 활어 임시 보관시설에서
방어들이 힘차게 헤엄칩니다.

몸길이 1미터를 넘나드는 이른바 '대방어'들이 대다수입니다.

늦가을을 맞은 마라도 앞바다에 어장이 형성되면서
본격적인 방어철이 시작됐습니다.

이달들어 적게는 25척에서 많게는 40척이 조업에 나서
현재까지 5천 500마리를 잡았습니다.

지난해 같은 기간 어획량보다 두 배 가까이 많은 규모입니다.

방어는 많이 잡히고 있는 반면 소비량이 크게 줄어들면서
가격은 기대에 미치지 못하고 있습니다.


이달 대방어 위판가격은 4만7천원으로
지난해 같은 기간 8만1천원에 비해 42% 하락했습니다.

특대방어와 중방어 가격은 1년 새 반토막이 났습니다.


방어를 잡아도 팔리지 않다 보니
지난 9일부터 13일까지 한때 방어 조업이 중단되기도 했습니다.

경기 침체가 이어지고 있는 가운데
강원지역에서
방어 어획량이 크게 늘면서
제주산 방어 소비가 위축된 것으로 분석되고 있습니다.

고유가로 조업 비용 부담이 커진 어민들에게
올해 방어 가격 하락과 소비 침체는 더욱 뼈아프게 다가옵니다.

기름값도 상승했는데 지금 소비가 너무 안되는 것 같아서 어민 입장에서 많이 힘든 상황입니다.

이런 가운데 어민들은 오는 26일부터 열리는
제22회 최남단 대방어축제에 기대를 걸고 있습니다.

제주 방어가 초반 소비 부진을 이겨내고
겨울철 대표 횟감의 위상을 되찾을 수 있을지 주목되고 있습니다.
