More Central Bus Lanes


All exclusive bus lanes that currently run on the outer-most lane will be relocated to the center of the roads by 2025.
Construction will begin at the end of this month. Once completed, travel time from (아라) Ara Elementary School to the airport will be reduced by 12 minutes. However, more traffic will be inevitable during the construction. Todd Thacker reports.


Jeju’s central bus lanes stretch from the (광양) Gwangyang Intersection to (아라) Ara Elementary School.
The second phase of the central bus lane creation project, which began in 2017, will launch soon.


The initial section of the second-stage of construction is (서광로) Seogwang-ro / from (광양) Gwangyang Intersection to (연동) Yeondong, which currently has right-most bus lanes.
Construction will begin at the end of this month and be completed by August of next year.


Once construction is completed, the expanded central bus lanes from (아라) Ara Elementary School to the airport will reduce travel times and improve the punctuality of public buses.



It currently takes 33 minutes for a bus to go from (아라) Ara Elementary School to the airport.
The province expects that the expanded central bus lanes will reduce travel times by 12 minutes, making it a 21-minute bus trip under normal conditions.
After the construction of (서광로) Seogwang-ro is completed in August next year, (동광로) Donggwang-ro, which connects (광양) Gwangyang Intersection and Jeju National Museum, (도령로) Doryeong-ro and (노형로) Nohyeong-ro that connect (연동) Yeondong and (무수천) Musucheon, and (중앙로) Jungang-ro that connects (아라) Ara Elementary School and the Jeju National University, which all currently have right-most bus lanes, will be redesigned to have central bus lanes.
Construction is set to finish by December 2025.


Along with the central bus lane expansion, the province is considering the introduction of city express buses connecting the airport, as well as new modes of transportation, such as trams.

The city express bus will be newly introduced as a part of the measures to improve the semi-public transportation system. The bus will run mainly on the central bus lanes of Jungang-ro and Dongseogwang-ro.


Operation of the central bus lanes on Seogwang-ro (서광로) will be temporarily suspended during the construction period.
The work is expected to cause traffic jams and other inconveniences, so the province is asking that drivers use a nearby detour.





중앙버스차로제 확대…아라초~공항 연결


현재 광양사거리에서 아라초등학교까지,
그리고 공항로에서 운영중인 중앙버스차로제.

2017년 이후 4년만에 2단계 공사가 시작됩니다.


2단계 공사의 첫 구간은
현재 가로변 버스차로제를 운영하고 있는
광양사거리에서
연동 입구까지의 서광로입니다.

이달말 공사에 들어가 내년 8월까지 마무리하게 됩니다.


이렇게 되면
아라초등학교에서 공항까지 중앙버스차로가 연결돼
대중교통을 이용할 경우
통행시간을 줄이고 정시성도 개선될 전망입니다.


아라초등학교에서 공항까지 대중교통을 이용할 경우
현재 33분이 걸렸으나
중앙버스차로로
막힘없이 이동할 경우 21분으로
지금보다 12분 단축할 것으로 제주도는 예상했습니다.

내년 8월 서광로 공사가 마무리되면
나머지 가로변차로인
광양사거리에서 국립제주박물관까지의 동광로,
연동입구에서
무수천 입구까지의 도령로와 노형로,
아라초등학교와
제주대학교 입구까지의 중앙로에 대해 중앙버스차로제로 바꾸게 됩니다.

오는 2025년 12월까지 모든 공사를 마무리한다는 구상입니다.

특히 중앙차로제가 확대되면
공항을 잇는 시내 급행 버스는 물론
향후 트램과 같은
신교통수단 운영까지 검토하고 있습니다.

공사기간에 서광로 가로변 버스차로제 운영은 일시 중단되며,
공사에 따른
교통체증과 불편이 예상되는 만큼
가까운 우회도로 이용을 당부하고 있습니다.
