Unpaid Wage Reaches Record High


Workers who haven’t received wages on time or their severance pay are visiting the Jeju office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
One construction worker said he is owed nearly 10 million won in unpaid severance.

The matter of unpaid wages in Jeju remains an on-going issue with serious consequences.

Last year, about 2,400 workers reported unpaid wages to the Ministry of Employment and Labor in Jeju.
The number was down 18.9 percent from 2021, but the accumulated total amount of claims exceeded 14.7 billion won.
Of that amount, 860 million won has yet to be paid.

By industry, construction accounted for 43.3 percent of the total, exceeding 6.4 billion won. This was followed by wholesale and retail and food and lodging industries at 16.9 percent. Financing, real estate, and service industries totalled 8.6 percent.


In the case of international workers, there were 241 reports of unpaid wages last year, down 30 percent from the previous year.

Analysts say that’s because of the decrease in the number of international workers entering Korea due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The province is encouraging its offices to make wage payments for any province-funded construction before the Lunar New Year as a part of its wage dispute prevention efforts.

This year Jeju’s workers have seen their wages go unpaid to the tune of nearly 15 billion won. With the Lunar New Year holiday just around the corner, some local workers still remain empty-handed.

제주 지역 체불임금 문제가 여전히 심각한 것으로 나타났습니다.

지난해 제주에서 임금을 받지 못해
고용노동청에 신고한 근로자는 2천 4백여 명.

신고자 수는 전년보다 18.9% 가량 줄었지만,

체불 금액은 147억 원을 넘고 있습니다.

이 가운데 8억 6천여 만 원은
아직까지도
지급되지 않고 있습니다.


지난해 체불 금액을 업종별로 살펴보면
건설업이 43.3%로 64억 원을 넘어 가장 많았고,

도소매와 음식 숙박업이 16.9%로,

금융 부동산, 서비스업이
8.6% 순으로 나타났습니다.

외국인 근로자의 경우
체불 임금 신고자 수가 지난해 241명으로
전년보다
30% 정도로 크게 줄었는데,

코로나 영향으로
국내로 유입되는 외국인 수가 줄어든 것이
가장 큰 원인으로 분석됩니다.

제주도는 관급 공사를 중심으로
대금을 설 이전에 지급하도록 하는 등
임금체불 예방활동을 벌일 예정입니다.


여전히 100억 원을 넘고 있는 제주 지역 체불 임금.

설 명절이 다가오고 있지만
체불 임금 문제가 해결되지 않으면서
근로자들의 시름이 깊어지고 있습니다.
