Schools Confused on Lifted Mask Requirements


As the mask requirements are lifted, schools are expected to have a different look from the coming spring semester.
In 3 years after the outbreak of COVID-19, students are able to take classes without a mask.


But masks are still recommended for some activities that could generate a lot of droplets at the gym or the music room, such as choruses and cheers.

Many point out that masks have a bad effect on development of children's language skills as teachers' lips and mouth are covered, and keep communication difficult.


But local schools are confused.
They're in a dilemma over whether to hire quarantine personnel that are planned to be deployed to schools from the spring semester.


The provincial educational office has secured 5.8 billion won of funds to employ 1,400 quarantine workers in preparation for another possible round of pandemic measures during the upcoming spring semester.


As the indoor mask requirements are lifted, the number of quarantine personnel and how to proceed the employment cannot be decided.
As the Ministry of Education's detailed guidelines for schools had not yet been delivered, the provincial office of education cannot make any determinations.

The manpower placement was not included in the meeting, and we will include it in the second or third week of February.


Some say that the vaccination rate for infants and toddlers is not high, and the mask requirement has played a role in preventing the COVID-19 infection and colds to some extent.
They have concerns on lifting the mask requirements at schools.

It is also not easy to hire large-scale quarantine personnel at the same time.
As the government's detailed guidelines are being delayed, the confusion in schools is also expected to continue for the time being.


마스크 벗는 교실...방역인력은 어쩌나?


마스크 착용 의무가 사라지면서
새학기부터 학교 모습도 크게 달라질 전망입니다.

코로나19 발생 이후 3년여 만에
교실에서도 마스크 없이
수업이 가능해졌기 때문입니다.

다만 체육관이나 음악실에서
학생들의 교육활동 내용에 따라 마스크 착용이 권장됩니다.

합창이나 응원처럼 비말이 많이 발생하는 교육 활동의 경우
마스크를 가급적 쓰도록 했습니다.

그동안 교육 현장에선 마스크가
입 모양을 가리는 탓에 의사소통을 어렵게 하고
아이들의 언어 발달에
좋지 않은 영향을 미친다는 지적이 많았습니다.

하지만 학교 현장은 여전히 혼란스럽습니다.

당장 신학기부터 학교에 배치하려던
방역 인력을 채용할 지를 두고 고민에 빠졌습니다.

제주도교육청은 올 1학기에
코로나 재유행에 대비해
1천 4백 여명의
방역 인력을 배치하기로 하고
58억원의 예산도 확보한 상황입니다.

마스크 착용 의무가 사라지면서
이전처럼
방역인력 규모와
절차를 이행할 지 결정하지 못하고 있습니다.

이와 관련한 교육부의
세부지침 안내가 늦어지면서
이러지도 저러지도 못하는 상황입니다.

일각에선 영유아의 경우 백신 접종률이 높지 않고
마스크가
코로나19와 감기 예방에
어느 정도 역할을 했다는 인식이 있는 만큼
우려가 있는 것도 사실입니다.


대규모의 방역인력을 동시에 채용하는 것 역시 쉽지 않은 상황에서
정부의 세부 지침이 늦어지며
학교 현장의 혼란도 당분간 계속될 전망입니다.
