Survival Swimming Classes Return


Survival swimming sessions will be made a priority at elementary schools beginning in the upcoming spring semester.

While first and second graders will learn in classroom sessions, students in third grade and above will be given swimming pool sessions.
Ten hours of survival swimming sessions are mandatory every year.
More than 28,000 elementary school students will take classes on survival swimming and rescue techniques.

As the pandemic is expected to slow this year, first and second graders in elementary schools will have 2 hours of classroom sessions, and from third to sixth graders will take 2 hours of classroom sessions and 8 hours of swimming pool sessions.


With an increasing number of local schools being equipped with swimming pools, local education officials are recommending swimming classes as part of the physical education curriculum.

Currently there are 10 schools in Jeju City and four schools in Seogwipo City with pools. (영평) Yeongpyeong and (한림) Hallim Elementary Schools, and Seogwipo Middle School were equipped with swimming pools last year.
Education authorities are providing extra operating expenses to schools with swimming pools.


A budget of 160 million won will be offered to schools with swimming facilities to recruit swimming instructors and facility managers.
Education authorities are also planning to build additional swimming pools at schools if requested.

After a long suspension of swimming classes due to the pandemic, students can now look forward to a new semester of survival education and swimming lessons in their own school pool.




"체육시간에도 수영 적극 권장"


신학기부터 초등학생을 대상으로 생존 수영교육이 강조됩니다.

저학년인 1학년과 2학년은
이론 교육을 중심으로 진행되는데 반해
3학년 이상부터
실기 교육 중심으로 이뤄집니다.

생존 수영 교육은 연간 10시간 가량 의무적으로 실시합니다.

초등학생 2만8천여 명이 교육 대상으로
생존이나 수영,
구조 등에 관한 교육이 이뤄집니다.

올해는 코로나 상황이 마무리되고 있는 상황이어서 초등학교 1 2학년은 이론수업 중심의 2시간을 하게 되고요 그 다음에 3학년부터 6학년까지는 10시간을 하게 되는데 이론수업 2시간, 입수형 수업 8시간 정도 하게 됩니다.


제주교육당국은 특히
수영장을 보유한 학교가 늘어나면서
체육시간을 활용해 수영 수업을 적극 권장하기로 했습니다.

현재 수영장을 갖춘 학교는
지난해 개장한 영평초와 한림초, 서귀포중학교를 비롯해
제주시 10개교와
서귀포시 4개교에 이릅니다.

교육당국은 수영장을 보유한 학교에 별도의 운영비를 지원합니다.

한 학교마다 평균 1억6천만원을 지원해
수영강사나 시설 관리 직언 채용을 지원할 방침입니다.

이 밖에도 수영장을 필요로 하는 학교를 선정해
추가 건립도 추진합니다.

지속적인 학교 수영장 인프라 확장에도 불구하고
주춤했던 생존 수영 교육이
코로나19 거리두기 해제 조치로 본격화될 전망입니다.
