Electric Scooter Etiquette on the Island



This is an area near a college in (노형동) Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City.
Bikes and motorized scooters are neatly parked within the white line.


The compartment is a parking area for personal mobility vehicles, designated by the province to prevent the devices from ruining sidewalks, alleys and roads.
However, on the other side of the road some e-scooters occupy the sidewalk.


Some scooters have been dumped like they’ve been abandoned.
Some are spotted in the middle of a narrow sidewalk or blocking a crosswalk.


Pedestrians rush their steps away from the scooters.
If they trip and fall in their haste, they can collide with scooters leading to injury.


There are about 130 electric scooter parking areas designated to prevent unauthorized parking.
Along with the parking area designation, pedestrian-only sidewalks are designated to prohibit the riding and parking of e-scooters, but it is useless.

I try to avoid parked or moving e-scooters on sidewalks to prevent collisions. It’s uncomfortable to walk on sidewalks.

About 2,800 shared e-scooters are registered in Jeju as of last month.

As the number of e-scooters increases, various policies are being implemented for the safety of pedestrians and the convenience of riders, but e-scooters are becoming a headache as riders have rarely improved their conscientiousness.





전동 킥보드 무단 방치 '여전'


제주시 노형동 대학가 일대입니다.

하얀 구획선 안에
자전거와 전동킥보드가 줄지어 세워져 있습니다.

제주도가 점용 허가를 얻어
전동킥보드와 자전거의
주차 구역을 만들어 놓은 겁니다.

골목이나 인도에 무단으로
방치되는 걸 막기 위해서입니다.

하지만 길 건너편에는
인도 위를 차지한 전동킥보드들이 눈에 띕니다.

근처를 살펴보니 곳곳에서
아무렇게나 방치되는 킥보드를 쉽게 볼 수 있습니다.

좁은 인도 가운데에 주차해 놓는가하면,
횡단보도 앞 쪽에
떡하니 자리잡은 경우도 눈에 띕니다.

보행자들은 킥보드를 피해 발걸음을 재촉합니다.

걸려 넘어질 경우
자칫하면 사고로 이어질 수 있어 위험해보입니다.

무단 방치를 막기 위해
제주 전역에 지정된
전동킥보드 주차 구역은 130여 곳.

이 외에도
보행자안심구간을 지정해
킥보드의 인도 주행과 주차를 금하고 있지만
무용지물입니다 .

그냥 제가 피해 다니는 거예요 킥보드 앞에 있거나 세워져 있으면. 이렇게 자칫 사고가 날 수도 있으니까 (걸어 다닐 때) 불편한 점이 있는 것 같아요.


지난달 기준
제주에서 운행되고 있는
공유형 전동킥보드는 2800여 대.

킥보드 수가 늘어나면서
보행자의 안전과
이용자들의 편의를 고려한
여러 제도들이 시행되고 있지만

이용자들의 의식 개선이
좀처럼 되지 않으면서
골칫거리가 되고 있습니다.
