Fewer visitors, fewer seats


This year, the number of Koreans visiting Jeju is on the decrease.

About 1.6 million domestic tourists have visited Jeju so far this year.
That’s down nearly 160,000 people, or 9 percent, from 1.76 million visitors last year.

These numbers show that people’s desire to travel abroad and see international destinations is greater than their inclination to visit Jeju.

And while the number of tourists has decreased, the number of flights has also shrunk, causing seat shortages.


This is because airlines are increasing the number of international flights while reducing air routes for Jeju, in keeping with the ramped up demand for overseas travel.

Over the past month, 13,400 flights moved passengers between the island and the mainland, for a total of just over 2.5 million seats.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of flights decreased by 8 percent and the number of seats dropped 9.7 percent.

During the school winter vacation season that normally ends at the end of this month, the island welcomes an increasing number of family tourists.
Most flights have been fully booked since early this week.

Over the past week, more than 263,700 visited Jeju, and flights are fully booked with an average of 38,000 passengers a day and a 98% boarding rate.


But many are worried about the spring tourism season.
If the current trend continues, it will be more difficult to get tickets from March when school trips begin.

With airlines currently fixing and submitting their summer season schedules for approval by authorities, the seat shortage is likely to worsen. Some industry watchers predict that airlines will concentrate on profitable international flights while cutting domestic flights.

In light of people’s desire to travel overseas this year, Jeju’s domestic tourism market is expected to face uncertainty for the foreseeable future.



관광객 감소에 좌석난까지…봄 관광 더 걱정


올들어 제주를 찾는 내국인 관광객들의 발길이 줄고 있습니다.


올들어 지금까지 제주를 찾은 내국인 관광객은
160만여 명.

지난해 176만여 명 보다 9.0% 16만명 가까이 감소한 규모입니다.


억눌렸던 해외여행 욕구가 풀리면서
제주보다는 해외로 빠져나가고 있는 겁니다.

관광객은 감소했지만
항공편도 줄면서 때아닌 좌석난까지 빚어지고 있습니다.

해외여행 수요가 증가하면서
항공사들이 제주 노선을 줄이는 대신
국제선 운항을 확대하고 있기 때문입니다.

지난 한달간 제주공항 국내선 항공수송실적은
1만3천400여 편에
공급석은 250만6천여 석으로 집계됐습니다.

지난해 같은 기간과 비교해
운항 편수로는 8.0%, 공급 좌석은 9.7% 감소했습니다.

특히 겨울방학을 맞아 가족단위 관광객들이 몰리면서
이번주 초부터는 사실상 만석으로
표를 구하기 어려운 상황이 이어지고 있습니다.

지난 한 주 동안에는 26만 3천 7백여명의 관광객이 제주를 찾았으며 1일평균 3만 8천여 명, 탑승률 98%로 항공권은 사실상 매진 상태라고 볼 수 있습니다.


봄 관광시즌은 더 걱정입니다.

지금 추세대로라면
수학여행이 본격화되는 3월부터
항공권 구하기가 더 힘들어질 것으로 보입니다.

현재 항공사들이 하계시즌 스케줄을 신청하고 있는 가운데
수익성이 좋은 국제선 확대에 나설 것이라는 전망도 나오면서
좌석난은 심화될 가능성이 높습니다.

억눌렸던 기간이 길었던 만큼
해외여행 붐은 일시적인 현상에 그치지 않을 것으로 예상되면서
내국인 관광시장의 불확실성은 더 커질 전망입니다.
