More Support for After-School Child Care


From this spring semester, the hours of after-school child care programs at elementary schools will be expanded to the early evening.

The Jeju Provincial Office of Education has announced that 24 elementary schools will run after-school child care programs after 5 p.m. for dual-income couples and families in need.

According to a survey, most parents prefer programs that operate until 6:30 p.m. when they are able to pick their child up after work.

In line with the extended operating hours, education officials plan to newly deploy volunteers to help young students return home, along with additional caregivers.

To reflect the actual need for child care of dual-income parents and provide stable child care services, operating hours will be extended.


In addition, the number of classrooms for after-school child care programs has been expanded.

Last year, more than 830 students were on a waitlist for child care programs as the number of applicants exceeded demand.
Dual-income couples have expressed their concerns to officials.
This year, the number of child care classrooms will be increased by 18 for a total of 255 classes.
In addition, the number of private child care facilities entrusted by the educational office will be expanded from 13 to 14 institutions.


Education authorities expect that the expansion of the child care programs will increase capacity by 500 young students.

Meanwhile, the Jeju Provincial Office of Education is carrying out a feasibility study to see if a cooperative system with community centers could provide classrooms for child care programs in high-demand areas such as (아라동) Ara-dong and (이도동) Ido-dong.

사전 수요 조사 결과
대부분 퇴근시간에 맞춰
오후 6시 30분까지 운영하는 것을 선호했습니다.

교육당국은 연장 운영에 맞춰 돌봄전담사 외에도
어린 학생들의 귀가를 돕는
자원봉사자인 안전관리사를 별도로 배치할 방침입니다.

또 초등 돌봄 교실도 확대 운영합니다.

지난해는
정원을 훨씬 초과하는 신청자로
830여명의 학생들이 대기상태여서
많은 맞벌이 부부들이 불편을 호소해왔습니다.

이에 따라 올해는
18개의 돌봄교실을 늘려 모두 255개 교실을 운영합니다.

또 학교 이외에 민간에 위탁하는 마을키움터도 13개 기관에서
14개 기관으로 확대합니다.

교육당국은 돌봄교실 확대 운영으로
예년보다 5백명 가량
대기 수요를 줄일 수 있을 것으로 예상했습니다.

제주도교육청은 돌봄교실이나 지역아동센터 등과는 별도로
돌봄 수요가 많은 아라동과 이도동 등을 중심으로
주민센터 공간을 돌봄교실로 운영할 수 있는지에 대한 용역을 진행해
지방자치단체와 협력 체계를 구축한다는 계획입니다.
