Laudable Response of Police
In the afternoon, four foreigners wearing large backpacks entered a police station.
They explained something to the police officer with a worried look on their face.
On the afternoon of the 27th of last month, Indonesian tourists who came to Jeju for a family trip visited the police station, saying one of them left a cell phone on a bus.
The police carefully checked the bus route and came back about 30 minutes later.
The police officer studied the route of the bus that the tourists had boarded and followed it, and he successfully returned the cell phone to the owner.
The family was quite relieved.
Two days later, another loss of a cell phone was reported to the police.
A Filipina tourist asked for help, saying she left her cell phone in a taxi near Jeju City Hall.
However, it was not easy to communicate with the reporter because she could not speak any Korean at all.
The police officer understood the situation by using a phone interpretation service.

An owner of a store reported the loss on behalf of a foreigner. I tried to understand the needs and circumstances of the reporter using the 1330 phone interpretation service.
As information for departure such as their visa number was stored in the phone, the phone had to be returned to the owner quickly.
The police identified the plate number of the taxi that the tourist rode by checking video recorded by CCTVs near Jeju City Hall.
Later, the police found the taxi driver with her and were able to find the lost phone.
The woman who had her phone returned to her with the help of the police expressed her gratitude.

She was very happy and said "The Korean police are the best. They're so kind. Thank you." There have been a few moments when I feel proud from my work, and this experience was one of the moments.
It was heartwarming news from police officers who helped foreign tourists in trouble in an unfamiliar city.

커다란 배낭을 맨 외국인 4명이 지구대 안으로 들어옵니다.
걱정스러운 표정으로
경찰관에게 무언가 열심히 설명합니다.
지난달 27일 오후
제주로 가족여행을 온 인도네시아 관광객들이
버스에 휴대전화를 두고 내렸다며 지구대를 찾아왔습니다.
경찰이 버스노선을 꼼꼼히 확인하더니
30여 분 뒤, 다시 돌아옵니다.
관광객들이 탑승했던 버스 노선을 추적해
직접 휴대전화를 찾아온 겁니다.
걱정이 가득했던
외국인 관광객들의 얼굴에는
웃음꽃이 피어납니다.
이틀 뒤, 112로 접수된 또다른 분실신고.
제주시청 인근에서
필리핀 여성 관광객이
택시에 휴대전화를 두고 내렸다며
도움을 요청했습니다.
하지만 외국인 관광객은
한국말을 전혀 할 줄 몰라
의사소통이 쉽지 않았던 상황이었습니다.
현장에 출동한 경찰관은 기지를 발휘해
전화 통역 서비스를 이용해 상황 파악에 나섰습니다.

가게 업주 분께서 외국인 대신 신고를 해 주셨더라고요. 1330 (전화) 통역 서비스를 이용해서 외국인 분실자분의 요구 사항과 상황을 파악하려고 노력을 했습니다."
출국을 앞두고
비자 번호 등 필요한 정보들이 저장돼 있어
빠르게 휴대전화를 찾아야 하는 상황.
경찰은 주변 CCTV를 통해
외국인 관광객이 탔던 택시번호를 특정했습니다.
이후 경찰은 해당 관광객과 함께
택시기사가 있는 곳을 찾았고,
잃어버린 휴대전화를 찾을 수 있었습니다.
경찰의 도움으로
휴대전화를 되찾은 외국인은
연신 고마운 마음을 표현했습니다.

(휴대전화를 찾으니까) 굉장히 엄청 기뻐하시면서 '대한민국 경찰 최고다, 엄청 친절하다 감사하다' 이러면서 연신 찬사를 보내주셨습니다. 일을 하면서 뿌듯함을 느끼는 순간들이 몇 번 있었는데 이번 경험도 굉장히 뿌듯한 좋은 기회였던 것 같습니다.
