Thieves Target Unlocked Cars and Homes

On the 10th of this month, a man in his 20s was arrested by police for allegedly stealing items from a vehicle near a construction site in (조천읍) Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.


The suspect allegedly stole cash, a mobile phone, and debit cards from a parked vehicle in an alleyway and fled the scene.


He is thought to have targeted the vehicle because its side mirrors were not retracted, indicating that the doors were likely unlocked.

I don’t lock my car while on the job as workers often need to get things like tools or equipment out of my car. It’s bewildering to be a victim of a burglary.

After the theft, the suspect used the debit card to purchase a gold bracelet worth 4 million won at a jewelry shop located about 20 kilometers away, and sold the bracelet back to the pawn shop for cash.


A police investigation has revealed that the suspect used the stolen money for entertainment expenses.
On the night of the 14th, another man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of breaking into a two-story house in Jeju City and stealing items worth 500,000 won, including gold earrings and a watch.


According to a police investigation, the suspect targeted the house because it had an unlocked entrance.

Recently, there have been a series of burglaries targeting homes and vehicles that were not properly secured. Police have asked the public to be extra cautious to prevent such crimes.

With the warmer weather, more burglary cases have been reported due to people failing to lock their doors. When leaving one’s home or car, always lock the doors and do not keep valuables, such as jewelry, inside one’s car.


There have been 203 cases of car break-ins reported in Jeju over the past three years.
Meanwhile, there have been 340 cases of residential burglary on the island over the same period.

Police are urging the public to double-check that they have secured their property and to report any incidents, however minor, in order to help stop thieves in their tracks.

지난 10일,
제주시 조천읍의 한 공사현장 인근에서
차량 안의 물건을 훔친 혐의로
20대 남성이 경찰에 구속됐습니다.

피의자인 A씨는
골목에 주차된 차량에서
현금과 휴대전화,
체크카드 등을 훔쳐 달아났습니다.

범행 당시 해당 차량은 문이 열린 상태.
문이 잠기지 않아
사이드미러가 접히지 않은 점을 노려
범행 대상으로 삼은 겁니다.

(작업하는) 사람들이 왔다 갔다 하면서 꺼낼 게 많거든요. 연장이라든지 공구라든지 꺼낼 게 많은데, 그래가지고 (차 문을) 열여 둔 건데 황당하고 당황스럽죠.

범행 이후 A씨는
20km 가량 떨어진 금은방에서
훔친 카드로
400만 원 상당의 금팔찌를 구매한 뒤,
이를 다시 전당포에 팔아 현금으로 바꿨습니다.

경찰 조사에서 A씨는
훔친 돈을 유흥비로 사용했다고 진술한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

지난 14일 밤에는
제주시내 한 주택 2층에 침입해
금 귀걸이와 손목시계 등
50만 원 상당을 훔친 혐의로 50대 남성이 구속되기도 했습니다.

경찰 조사 결과
B씨는 출입문이 잠기지 않은 주택을 골라
범행을 저지른 것으로 전해졌습니다.

최근 문이 잠기지 않은
주택이나 차량을 노린
절도 범죄가 잇따르고 있어
각별한 주의가 요구됩니다.

날씨가 풀리면서 출입문을 잠그지 않아 이번과 같은 사례가 빈번히 발생하고 있습니다. 부재 시에는 반드시 출입문을 잠그시고 차량을 주차할 때는 반드시 차량 문을 잠그고 차량 내에는 귀금속 등을 보관하지 않도록 당부드립니다.


최근 3년 사이
제주에서 발생한 차량털이는 203건.

주거침입 절도는 340건에 이르고 있습니다.

경찰은 절도 피해를 막기 위해서는
잠금장치를 철저히 확인하고,

피해 금액이 적더라도
반드시 신고해야
더 큰 피해를 막을 수 있다고 당부했습니다.
