Translated School Newsletters Available


Ms. (박은주) Park Eun-ju married and moved from Mongolia to Jeju 14 years ago.
Although time has passed and she’s now familiar with the Korean language, she still finds it difficult to read and understand written Korean.


After her child enrolled in elementary school, Park had difficulties understanding the school newsletters written in Korean.

Since I don’t exactly understand the newsletters, I often had to ask my husband. There were many things that my kids couldn't participate in or missed out on.

But now, these kinds of concerns have been greatly reduced.

She can now receive school newsletters translated into Mongolian with the help of the Jeju Multicultural Education Center at the Jeju International Education Institute.

I’ve missed out on various programs, but now that the translation is available, I can clearly understand school newsletters and participate in school activities.


With the help of computer translation tools, the school newsletters are translated into 60 different languages, including Mongolian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Russian.

For more accurate translations, six languages, including Vietnamese and Chinese, are manually translated by professional translators on request.

The machine translations are provided through QR codes, websites, or online documents.

Thanks to the translation service, school programs are more widely circulated, and parents better informed, ultimately helping parents to be more involved in school activities.

The translation service was piloted in some elementary schools in Jeju.
The enthusiastic response led to it being expanded to all schools from August last year.

Currently, there are more than 2,600 multicultural students attending elementary, middle, and high schools in Jeju, accounting for about 3 percent of all students in Jeju.

These newly translated school newsletters are helping multicultural families to benefit from new communication channels between parents and schools, greatly reducing barriers that overseas immigrant parents face.




다문화 가정 "이젠 가정통신문 쉬워요"


14년 전 몽골에서 제주로 시집온 박은주 씨.

시간이 흘러 지금은 한국 말은 익숙해졌지만 여전히 한글은
읽고 이해하기가 쉽지 않습니다.

특히 자녀들이 입학 한 후 학교에서 보내는 한글로 된 가정통신문을 제대로 이해하지 못해 어려움이 많았습니다.

정확한 내용을 모르니까 (애)아빠한테 해달라고 하든지 프로그램이 여러가지 있는데 참가를 못하거나 놓치는 부분이 많았는데..


하지만 이제는 그런 걱정이 크게 줄었습니다.

제주국제교육원 제주다문화교육센터의 도움으로 몽골어로 번역된 가정통신문을 받아볼 수 있게 됐기 때문입니다.

놓친 부분이 많아서 아쉬운 점이 많았는데 이제는 번역이 다 돼 있으니까 내가 (가정통신문 내용을)다 알 수 있고 참가할 수 있고..

학교에서 번역을 요청한 가정통신문은 몽골어 뿐만 아니라 중국어와 베트남어, 일본어, 러시아어 등 60개 언어로 자동 번역이 가능하고

더 정확한 번역을 위해 베트남어와 중국어 등 6개 언어는
수동 번역을 요청할 경우 번역가들이 직접 번역해 줍니다.

번역된 가정통신문은 QR코드나 웹 주소, 번역 문서를 통해
가정에서 쉽게 전달받을 수 있습니다.

학교 프로그램들이 제대로 이제 안내가 되어지고 또 학부모님들의 이해도도 높아져서 그것이 결국은 학부모들의 학교 참여기회를 높히고..


일부 초등학교에서 시범 운영됐지만 호응이 뜨겁자 지난해 8월부터는
모든 학교로 확대됐습니다.

현재 제주지역 초중고에는 2천6백여 명의 다문화가정 학생이 다니고 있습니다

제주 전체 학생의 3% 가량입니다.

이들에게 전달되는 다국어 가정통신문은 해외이주 학부모의 어려움을 크게 줄여주면서 학교와 소통하는 새로운 소통 창구가 되고 있습니다.
