Demographic Cliff Drops Steeper


The neighborhood of (이도) Ido 2-dong, Jeju City, which has the highest floating population in Jeju, is quiet during the day.


Although there is a so-called college street in the area, the reputation of being a youthful street seems to be fading as the footsteps of young people decrease.

While there used to be quite a few people who came to look around as they passed by, these days there are times where they hardly come in for 3-4 hours.


The outflow of population in Jeju in the first quarter of this year recorded the highest level in 15 years, and the trend of population decline is accelerating.


From January to March of this year, the number of people moving into the island was 26,580, while the number of people moving out was 27,502, resulting in a net outflow of 922 people.

This is the largest net outflow since the first quarter of 2008.


The population of Jeju has recorded a net outflow for the first time in three years since the first quarter of 2020.
Especially, 1,300 teenagers and people in their 20s had a net outflow, indicating an acceleration in the departure of the younger generation, including teenagers and young adults.

Due to the deepening low birthrate problem, the population in Jeju has recorded a natural decrease, where deaths outnumber births, for 20 consecutive months until February.

In addition, with the increase in the number of people leaving Jeju, the population issue is becoming even more serious."

Since the population is not only a factor in consumption but also a subject of labor supply and fiscal burden, the outflow of population has a significantly negative impact not only on the local economy but also on the sustainable development of the region.


With the rise in the natural decrease and the net outflow of population, the demographic cliff problem in Jeju is becoming more serious than ever before.




안 낳고 떠나고…'인구절벽 가속화'


제주에서 유동인구가 가장 많은 제주시 이도2동.
한낮에도 시내는 한산하기만 합니다.

대학로가 있지만
청년층의 발걸음이 줄면서
젊음의 거리라는 명성이 무색해 보입니다.

지나다니면서 구경하는 분들도 꽤 있었는데 요즘에는 진짜 3~4시간 동안 거의 안 들어올 때도 있고.


올해 1분기 제주지역 인구 순유출 규모가
15년 만에 최대치를 기록하는 등
인구 감소세가 더욱 가팔라지고 있습니다.

지난 1월부터 3월까지 제주도내 전입인구는 2만 6천580명,
전출인구는
2만 7천502명으로 집계됐습니다.

이에 따라
도내 순유출 인구는 922명으로
지난 2008년 1분기 이후 가장 많았습니다.

제주 인구가 순유출을 기록한 것은
지난 2020년 1분기 이후 3년 만입니다.

특히 10대와 20대에서 1천 300명이 순유출돼
청소년과 청년 등
미래세대의 이탈이
가속화되고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.

도내 인구는 저출산 문제가 심화되면서
지난 2월까지 20개월 연속 출생아보다
사망자가 많은
자연감소를 기록했습니다.

이런 가운데 제주를 빠져나가는 인구까지 늘면서
인구 문제는 더욱 심각해지고 있습니다.
