The Jeju Provincial Office of Education has sparked controversy over budget cuts for support for students with special education needs.

Members of the Education Committee of the Jeju Provincial Council criticized education authorities for eliminating accessibility for special education students from the budget of 17 billion won which already was reserved for such purpose.

In response, the education authorities stated that when an item is classified as a reserve fund during the budget review process, it is the same as being canceled. The POE also explained how there are many administrative challenges when an item is classified as a ‘reserve fund’.

제주종합교육지원센터 매입 예산을 전액 삭감해 논란이 일고 있습니다.

제주도의회 교육위원회의원들은 지난 본예산 예산 심사과정에서 특수교육 대상 학생들의 접근성 향상을 위해
관련 예산 170여 억 원을 유보금으로 결정했지만
이번에 제출된 추경안에는 관련 예산이 전액 삭감됐다며 교육당국을 질타했습니다.

이에 대해 교육청은 당시 예산 심사과정에서 매입 안건이 유보금으로 분류되자 사실상 매입이 무산된 것으로 봤다며
특히 기금 등이 아닌 유보금으로 분류될 경우 예산을 집행하는데 행정절차에도 문제가 많다고 답변했습니다.
