Pastry Chef Saved Guest


A woman in her 60s suddenly loses consciousness and collapses at a hotel cafe.
Amidst the confusion, a staff member from the bakery kitchen rushes out.


The person called emergency services and then immediately went to the woman who had collapsed, administering CPR and rescue breathing in turn.
Fortunately, the woman regained consciousness.
The man who saved the woman’s life is Gang Seo-won, a local hotel’s pastry chef with 27 years of experience.
Due to a delay in the arrival of paramedics, this was a situation where not taking immediate emergency measures could have resulted in tragedy.


Having learned basic CPR during his military service, Mr. Gang didn't hesitate and rushed to the patient upon hearing cries for help.

I simply had the thought that I had to save her, no matter what. She was similar in age to my mother and mother-in-law, and I saw her as a family member. Seeing the urgency of the situation and her daughter in tears, I felt compelled to step forward. Anyone would have done the same.


Other staff members who witnessed the incident said that the chef’s swift and calm response saved the woman’s life.

I would have been quite surprised and flustered if I were the pastry chef. Seeing how he handled the situation quickly and efficiently, I realized that I should also be able to respond calmly in such situations.

A few years ago, Mr. Gang provided assistance in apprehending a sex offender in the city of Incheon, where he used to work.
As a result, he received an exemplary citizen commendation from the city government.

When faced with such situations, it seems like I can't just stand by. I wonder if it’s in my DNA to take action whenever something bad happens. It's really difficult for my family. But how should I handle my gut reaction?

The woman who lost consciousness is reported to be doing well and back to her daily life after receiving further medical care.
She expressed her gratitude to her hero and the other hotel staff by personally writing a letter and sending along a handmade gift.



쓰러진 투숙객…뛰쳐나온 제과장이 살려

호텔 카페에서 여성이 갑자기 의식을 잃고 쓰러집니다.

주변에서 우왕좌왕 하는 사이
베이커리 주방에 있던
한 직원이 달려나옵니다.

119 신고를 부탁하고
곧바로 쓰러진 여성에게 다가가
심폐소생술과 인공호흡을 번갈아 실시합니다.

쓰러졌던 여성은 다행히 의식을 되찾습니다.

여성을 살려낸 건 27년 경력의 강서원 호텔 제과장입니다.

구급대원이 오기까지 수십 분이 걸려
응급조치를 하지 않으면
더 위험해질 수 있었던 상황.


심폐소생술은 군 복무때 배운게 전부였지만
"살려달라"는 소리에 주저 없이 환자에게 달려갔습니다.

그냥 무조건 살려야겠다는 생각뿐이었습니다. 제 어머니, 장모님 연배 비슷하고 가족이라고 생각하니까 당시 위급했고
따님도 울고 그런 모습을 보니까 나서야 되겠다는 생각.
누가 해도 했었을 거예요.

여성 성추행범을 검거하는데 도움을 줬고
인천시로부터 모범시민상을 받기도 했습니다.

그런 상황 보면 못 참는 것 같아요. 지금도 가다가 도덕적이지 않으면 뭐라도 하려는 그런 DNA가 있는지. 가족들이 너무 힘들어하죠. 그런데 몸이 반응하는 걸 어떻게 하겠습니까?

의식을 잃었던 60대 여성은
응급처치와 병원 치료 이후 다행히 건강과 일상을 되찾았고
이후 열 손가락과
온몸으로 자신을 살린
제과장과 호텔 측에 직접 쓰고 만든
편지와 공예품으로
감사 인사를 전했습니다.
