Cruise Ships Bring Thousands of Japanese


Amid thick fog that blankets (강정) Gangjeong Port, a single cruise ship gradually reveals itself.

The enormous vessel is the height of a 19-story building and measures over 300 meters in length. It weighs over 170,000 tons.

Of the cruise ships that have docked in Jeju so far, this is the largest.

The number of passengers on board is around 3,500, including Japanese citizens and other foreign tourists.

The visitors who disembarked from the ship found it hard to hide their excitement as they looked forward to exploring Jeju Island.

These international tourists are exploring every part of the market, venturing into its restaurants to enjoy various dishes, including Jeju's seafood specialties.


They try the samples on offer at various display stands and ask questions about the products, fully immersing themselves in the traditional market experience.

The market is bustling and the merchants are busier than ever. They’re embracing the opportunity to cater to the influx of visitors.

After the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, there has been an increase in overseas travel and a decrease in domestic tourists. This makes merchants quite concerned. But at the same time, international visitors fly to Jeju. There may be some challenges in communication, so some kind of training program could be beneficial.


There were a total of three cruise ships that left Japan and docked in Jeju on May 29 and 30. As a result, approximately 4,000 Japanese tourists visited the island.


There have been efforts to increase interest in Jeju by operating promotional booths and holding presentations on board cruise ships. These initiatives have been found to be effective in raising awareness of Jeju and increasing the disembarkation rate of passengers.

The arrival of 3 cruise ships indicates that 3 different cruise companies are choosing Jeju as a port of call. We will continue to make every effort to ensure that visitors have the best experience possible during their time in Jeju.


With a steady stream of international cruise ships from Japan making their way here, it is expected that Jeju’s once booming Japanese tourism market will again play a major part in the island’s tourism industry.




초대형 크루즈 입항…日 관광시장 활기 주목

길이 300m가 넘는 17만톤 급의 초대형 크루즈입니다.

지금까지 제주에 입항한 크루즈 가운데 가장 큰 규모입니다.

탑승 인원은
일본인을 비롯한 외국인 관광객 3천500여 명.

정박한 배에서 내린 관광객들은
제주를 둘러볼 생각에 설렘을 감추지 못했습니다.

즐거운 마음으로 왔습니다. 처음에는 안개 때문에 아무것도 보이지 않았는데 안개가 개니까 무척이나 예쁜 풍경이 보이고 이제 쇼핑 즐기려고 합니다.

코로나 해제된 이후로 해외로 많이 나가고 국내 관광객들이 줄어들었어요.
그래서 상인분들이 많이 염려하고 있는데 일단은 해외에서도 입국이 돼서...기본적인 의사소통에 조금 문제가 있을 수 있으니까 그런 부분에서 교육이라든지..."

최근 이틀동안 제주에 입항한
일본발 크루즈는 모두 3척.

이를 통해 약 4천 명의 일본인 관광객이 제주를 찾았습니다.

특히 크루즈 내에서
제주 홍보부스 운영과 설명회를 진행해
제주에 대한 관심을 높여
하선율을 높이고 있는 것으로 평가되고 있습니다.
