Rip Currents, Jellyfish Call for Caution

Just as they are about to be washed onto a dangerously rocky part of the shore, a surf rescue team hauls each child onto their rescue boards, just in the nick of time.

We are regular surfers who spend a lot of time in the ocean. The rip currents in this area can be very dangerous for swimmers. As we were surfing along this rocky shoreline, we noticed swimmers caught in the strong currents and took immediate action to rescue them.

The following day, two individuals who were playing in the water at the same beach were swept away by rip currents. They, too, were rescued unharmed.

With Jeju’s beaches set to reopen, there have already been a series of incidents where beachgoers have been swept away by the waves and involved in rip current accidents.

Although there were no incidents in 2022, this year, even before the beach's official opening, there have already been five cases of individuals being caught in rip currents.

Given that this year marks the first vacation season after the declaration of the end of the pandemic, officials expect a large increase in the number of people using the island’s beaches.

Consequently, the risk of accidents has escalated, and in fact the number of incidents occurring daily is surpassing the officially recorded numbers.


Rip currents are formed when waves gather and flow rapidly in one direction, reaching speeds of up to 3 meters per second.

In an instant, swimmers and beachgoers can be swept away, potentially drifting hundreds of meters into the open sea.


From this month, a rip current "caution" advisory has been in effect for Jungmun Beach, and the Coast Guard has intensified their maritime patrols and surveillance efforts.

If possible, swimming at a 45-degree angle in either direction of the water flow can be helpful. It's also advisable to adopt a face-up position if you’re exhausted and waiting for rescue. The Coast Guard is conducting maritime and land patrols at least three times daily, and plans to enhance its efforts by assigning two marine patrol units starting from July.

Alongside rip current accidents, there have been recent sightings of highly toxic box jellyfish in the waters near Jeju Port.

In light of the fact that the first jellyfish stinging incident of the year has already occurred at (협재) Hyeopjae Beach, it’s important that beachgoers remain vigilant while enjoying Jeju’s sunny seaside retreats.





개장 앞둔 해수욕장…이안류·해파리 사고 '주의'


백사장에서 약 100미터 떨어진 해상에
아이들이 튜브에 의지한 채 떠 있습니다.

주변 암초에 부딪힐 수 있는 위험한 순간,
서퍼 구조대가 출동해 아이들을 한 명씩 보드에 태웁니다.

이안류 사고로 표류하던 5명은

다음 날에도 같은 해수욕장에서
물놀이를 하던 2명이 이안류에 휩쓸렸다가
구조되기도 했습니다.

지난해에는 한명도 없었지만
올해는 개장 전인데도
벌써 5명이 이안류 사고를 당했습니다.

특히 올해는 엔데믹 선언 이후 첫 피서철인 만큼
물놀이객들이 늘어날 것으로 예상되며
사고 위험이 더 커졌고
실제로 공식 집계보다 더 많은 사고가
매일 잇따르고 있습니다.

이안류는 파도가 한 곳으로 모여 빠져나갈 때 생기는데
초속 3미터까지 속도가 빨라지면서 물놀이객들은 순식간에
수백미터 먼 바다가 까지 떠밀려갈 수 있습니다.

중문해수욕장에는 이달부터 이안류 '주의' 예보가 내려졌고
해경에서도 해상 예찰을 강화하고 있습니다.

이안류 사고와 더불어 최근 제주항 인근 해역에는
강한 독성을 지닌 노무입깃해파리가 나타나는 것으로 확인된 가운데
협재 해수욕장에서 올해 첫 쏘임사고도 발생하면서
물놀이 안전 사고에 각별한 주의가 필요합니다.
