Natural Pool Closed Due to Rockfall
At the entrance of (황우지) Hwangwooji Coast, also known as the Fairy Bathhouse, entrance and access are restricted due to concerns about rockfall.
While it is considered a popular summer water play destination in Jeju, visitors are unable to enter the water and are forced to turn away.
This is because access has been restricted due to concerns about rockfall along the coast.

We came here because it's known as a snorkeling spot, but when we tried to rent life jackets, we were told we couldn't enter. So we just looked from a distance for a short while. We came all the way wearing our swimsuits, so it's really disappointing.
Usually, the coast would be bustling with water play enthusiasts during the summer, but with access restrictions, Hwangwooji Coast remains calm.
On one side of the coast, life jackets and water play equipment, prepared for rental, are stacked up alone.
Since early last year, concerns about rockfall have been continuously raised, leading Seogwipo City to conduct safety inspections and risk assessments for steep slopes and potential disasters.
The result is a Grade C classification, which allows for regular safety inspections and the ability to designate and manage collapse hazard zones when necessary.
Accordingly, Seogwipo City has decided to restrict access to Hwangwooji Coast.

In April this year, based on the safety consultation and disaster risk assessment conducted, we decided to restrict access to Hwangwooji Coast due to the possibility of casualties caused by rockfall.
Local merchants who were preparing for summer business understand the situation but cannot help feeling disappointed.

After the end of the pandemic, we were hoping to do some business. It's the peak of summer, but it's completely impossible. I really don't know what to do. The impact is significant.
Furthermore, the entire Hwangwooji Coast is designated as a cultural heritage protection zone, making it difficult to install nets or fences for rockfall prevention.
Seogwipo City has stated that separate deliberation is required for safety measures and announced plans to continue restricting access for the time being.
낙석 위험 출입통제 '선녀탕'…"아쉬워요"

서귀포시 황우지해안 입구입니다.
여름철 제주 물놀이 명소로 꼽히지만
방문객들은
물가에 들어가지도 못하고 발길을 돌립니다.
해안가 낙석 우려로 출입이 통제됐기 때문입니다.

지금 수영복까지 다 입고 왔는데 못 들어가서 너무 아쉽고….
평소 같으면
물놀이객들로 북적거릴 날씨지만
출입이 통제되면서
황우지 해안은 한적하기만 합니다.
해안 한편에는
대여를 위해 준비해 놓은
구명조끼와 물놀이 용품들만
덩그러니 쌓여있습니다.
지난해 초부터
낙석에 대한 우려가 지속적으로 제기되면서
서귀포시가
안전점검 자문과 급경사지 재해위험도 조사를 실시했습니다.
결과는 C등급.
정기적 안전점검을 실시하고
필요할 경우 붕괴위험지역으로 지정 관리할 수 있는 등급입니다.
이에 따라 서귀포시가
황우지 해안 출입을 제한하기로 한 겁니다.

올해 4월 제주도 안전자문과 재해위험도 조사를 통해서 낙석으로 인한 인명사고 가능이 있다는 결과에 따라서 황우지해안 출입을 제한하게 됐습니다.
여름 장사를 준비하던 인근 상인들은
이런 상황을 이해하면서도
아쉬운 마음이 드는 건 어쩔 수 없습니다.

코로나 끝나니까 이제 좀 장사를 해야지 했는데... 여름 한철이라고 봐야 되는데 이게 아예 딱 안 되니까 진짜 어떻게 해야 될지를 모르겠어요. 정말 타격이 커요.
게다가 황우지 해안 일대가
문화재보호구역으로 지정돼 있어
낙석 방지를 위한
그물이나 철망을 설치하기도 어려운 상황.
서귀포시는
안전조치를 위해서는 별도의 심의가 필요하다며
당분간은 계속해서 출입을 제한할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.
