Jeju’s Heritage Reinterpreted
Small (허벅) Heobeok jars are neatly arranged on a desk.
A young person has reinterpreted Jeju's traditional (허벅) Heobeok pottery into reusable cups and decorative items, called (새허벅) Saeheobeok.
Saeheobeok is made from eco-friendly materials called CXP, utilizing tree branches and sawdust.
As part of a cultural project in Seogwipo City, (새허벅) Saeheobeok has been produced under the eco-friendly upcycling programs of the ‘(반지롱 노지스토어) Banjirong Nogistore’ project.

The Heobeok used to be an earthenware jar. But we have recreated it into an eco-friendly tumbler that we can carry around. This is a way to reproduce the past culture and also a way to preserve Jeju's nature.
Members of the Seogwipo Senior Club have also contributed to the environmental effort.
Using discarded (삼다수) Samdasoo water bottles, they weave greenish colored recycled fibers into something resembling braided hair.
They make Mangtaegi sacks for the newly designed tumbler.

We made this by recycling Samdasoo bottles. It reminded me of the old days, and I was so happy to make it from recycled materials, so I worked hard on it.
The traditional weaving technique was particularly noteworthy, as artisans used the same method to create straw sacks.
Since skills passed down through generations have become tradition and culture, there is renewed hope that this legacy will continue on.

Upon receiving the orders, I created a sample and shipped it out. They liked it, so I continued making more. If this trend continues, it will be good for creating jobs as well.
The proceeds from these reinterpreted products are being donated to Jeju's Marine Environmental Protection Organization and used to pay the artisans, making the overall project all the more impactful.

다회용컵과 장식품 등으로 재해석한 이른바 새허벅입니다.

'반지롱 노지스토어' 프로젝트 가운데 하나입니다.

예전의 물허벅은 항아리였지만 저희가 들고 다닐 수 있는 친환경 텀블러로
만들어서 들고 다니는 것 자체가 과거의 문화를 재현하는 것이기도 하고
지금의 제주의 자연을 지킬 수 있는 방법이기도 해서….

버려지는 삼다수 병으로 만들어진
연둣빛의 재생섬유를
마치 머리를 땋는 것처럼 매듭짓습니다.
허벅 전용 가방,
제주어로 멜망탱이라고 불리는 망태기를 만드는 겁니다.

삼다수 병을 재활용해서 이거 실을 빼서 만든 겁니다. 옛날 생각나고 이거 재활용으로 만든다는 게 너무 기뻐서 그냥 열심히 만들었습니다.
특히 멜망탱이 제작 과정에
테왁 장인들이
테왁 망사리 짜는 방식을 그대로 적용하면서 눈길을 끌었습니다.
어르신들이 과거 어깨너머로 배운 기술이
이제는 전통과 문화라고 불리는 만큼
누군가가 이를 이어갔으면 하는 바람에서입니다.

주문이 들어오니까 내가 기초(샘플) 하나 짜서 보내봤거든요.
그래서 그게 좋다고 해가지고 그다음부터 하게 됐어요. 이게 앞으로 계속 이어지면 일자리 하기에도 좋고….
재해석된 허벅과 망태기의 수익금은
제주의 해양환경보호단체에 기부되고
테왁 장인들의 인건비로 사용되며 의미를 더하고 있습니다.
