Scorching Heat Killing Livestock



At a chicken farm in (한림읍) Hallim-eup, Jeju City, the chickens open their beaks and gasp for air, struggling to breathe.

The oppressive heat has slowed down their movements significantly.


To reduce the internal temperatures, the farmers tirelessly run fans and spray water on the sunshades outside the buildings.


The heat is also taking a toll on the exhausted pigs.

Large pigs lie down on the floor, barely moving or breathing.

With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius for consecutive days, livestock management is being faced with an emergency.

To cool down the pigs, the farmers use fans and regularly spray cool water, but the internal temperatures remain high.


Pigs, in particular, are vulnerable to the heat as they lack a well-developed sweat gland system. This means they suffer from decreased appetite due to scorching heat following the late monsoon season.

The unrelenting heat is causing great concern among farmers.

We’re doing our best to lower the perceived temperature for the pigs. I can’t sleep these days because I worry that the pigs we raised with great care might suddenly die in the prolonged heat.

돼지들 (체감) 온도를 낮추는 데에 주력하고 있어요. 폭염이 지속되면 애지중지 키웠던 돼지들이 갑작스럽게 폐사하는 일이 일어나지는 않을까 그런 걱정 때문에 요즘 하루하루 잠을 못 자고 있습니다.


Since a heatwave warning was issued in Jeju on July 10th, there have been over 33 reports of livestock deaths due to the heat within just 20 days.


Most of the reported cases involved pigs.
With the heatwave expected to continue for the time being, there are concerns that the number of livestock deaths will increase.

As the scorching heat continues unabated, livestock and livestock farmers are facing a tough summer ahead.




찜통 더위에 가축 관리 '비상'…폐사신고 잇따라


제주시 한림읍의 한 양계장.

닭들이 입을 벌린 채 거친 숨을 몰아 쉽니다.

숨 막히는 더위에 닭들의 움직임도 평소보다 더뎌졌습니다.

내부 온도를 낮추기 위해 쉴새 없이 환풍기를 돌리고
건물 밖 차광막에 물을 뿌리기도 합니다.

더위에 지친 건 돼지들도 마찬가지.

몸집이 큰 돼지들이 바닥에 축 늘어져 있습니다.

가뿐 숨을 몰아쉬며 꼼짝도 하지 않습니다.
연일 30도를 웃도는 폭염이 이어지면서
가축 관리에도 비상이 걸렸습니다."

더위를 식히기 위해 선풍기를 돌리고
직원들이
수시로 시원한 물을 뿌려보지만
내부 온도는 좀처럼 떨어지지 않습니다.

특히 돼지는
땀샘이 발달하지 않아 더위에 취약한데,
늦은 장마에
곧바로 무더위가 찾아오면서
사료를 먹는 양도 크게 줄었습니다.

꺾일 줄 모르는 폭염에 농가의 걱정은 큽니다.

제주 지역에 폭염특보가 발효된 지난달 10일부터 최근까지
한 달도 되지 않아
폭염으로 인한
가축 폐사 피해 신고가
30건 넘게 접수되고 있습니다.

대부분이 더위에 취약한 돼지였습니다.

당분간 폭염이 지속될 것으로 예보되면서
폐사 피해는 더 늘어날 것으로 우려되고 있습니다.

연일 30도를 웃도는 찜통더위에
가축들도 축산 농가도
힘겨운 여름 나기를 이어가고 있습니다.
